Why not get it working first?

Wouldn't it have been better to put something on the website before publicising the URL? Right now, it's just a bunch of broken links and error pages.

stop being so negative and rude! your opinion expressed is i fear a sad reflection of the way people think these days. it would be nice to give people encouragement when they are trying to do something. and by the way, the website is specifically by design a collection of contribtions from owners, and you have to start somewhere!

I understand how frustrating it can be getting a new site up and running and how much one wants to get the fruits of ones efforts on display.

I think it would help enormously if you were to get some content onto the index2.html page. It could be just text and maybe provide a welcome to visitors, a brief introduction to what the site will be seeking to do and an outline of progress so far. In addition you could invite contributions from interested parties.

You could write that in about half an hour and it would represent a big step forward.

As for the criticism, take it on the chin and don't be too sensitive about it. Comments made in text often come over much more brutal than they were ever intended to be.

Keep at it and good luck. It will all turn out in the end.

I\'d be pleased to encourage you...

Well, Ian, if you need encouragement, I'll happily offer some.

I'd encourage using a "Please send details of your requirements or your boat for sale" message on the page linked to "Required/For Sale", rather than a fancy "Error 404" message.

I'd encourage putting some text on the main index page, rather than a big white space.

I'd encourage adding some contact details on the page linked to "Contact us" - even if it's only Adrian's email address. You say that the "website is specifically by design a collection of contribtions from owners" - how can they contribute if there are no contact details?

I'd encourage using "Under construction" pages on the other page links, rather than an "Error 404" message.

And if you thought I was being negative and rude, you really should get out more. As for being a "sad reflection of the way people think these days", you couldn't be further from the truth. The internet has transformed the exchange of information, but in the process people have become much more aware of the way information is presented on websites. Site visitors are becoming increasingly intolerant of websites which contain broken links and error messages, and there's simply no reason for them. If a site isn't built yet, why publicise it? All you achieve is causing frustration for people, who probably won't bother to visit the site ever again.

well pvb
in reply to your further post

i would like to thank you for your 'encouragement'

however i still believe your tone and content in your first post was far from encouraging! you were dismissive and rude by my book. i also take exception to being told i need to get out more by someone who does not know me. i have been 'out' more than enough both in my profession and in my forty odd years on this earth

Re: I\'d be pleased to encourage you...

hello pvb

what's the matter mate, can't you build a website?
bit beyond your mental capacity?

Thank you to those of you who have favoured the website, it is designed for all who own kestrel 22s.
It went live monday simply because it is easier to build when it's up and running. We also wanted the forum open so that k22 owners could make use of it as early as possible.
it will contain a history of these great pocket cruisers, an owners list past and present, restorations undertaken and underway, film and photos of Woodbridge where they were made, past and present, and a lot more that that.
We should have the whole site finished in about ten days

so my little pedant, give us about ten days, then come back and slag us down, we may even listen to it then.

cheers /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Don\'t worry, I\'ve seen much worse . . .

Ignore PVB, there is enough of this site up and running to publicise it IMHO, and it looks very promising. I get requests to add sites to BM all the time when there is either just a registrar holding page or Error 404 at the URL, or if you are lucky something that says 'Coming Soon'

(The people who amaze me are the ones who pay good money to advertise in YM or PBO or other high-volume mags and publicise URLS of non-existent websites - that could seriously damage your business . . .)

One wee tip which you can take or ignore - put some text on the index page if you want to do better in the search engines.

Nick, most of what you see . . .

Nick, most of what you see has been added today. My comments at 0806 today reflected the state of the site then. There's even a post on their own forum which comments on the fact that there was nothing to see!

Your search engine tip is a good one. They might also usefully build some metatags into their source code to use titles and descriptions for improved search results.

Aha . . .

If it's all been added today then your comments were kinda valid . . . knowing how quickly us 'butters jump down peoples' throats it might have been prudent to have delayed the announcement a few hours.

critisism taken on board and acted upon, thanks webcraft.

pbv pwv pmd pmt or what ever your log name is, don't be so quick to pour disdain and judgement on people, you may need their help one day.

go and look next wednesdy, and leave any CONSTRUCTIVE critiscism
on the board. Anything else will be lovingly junked /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: My point exactly! . . .

I've watched from afar while the site went through it's birthing pains. You were given much advice as to going live with a website not yet ready for live viewing (in several threads, not just here) but seem to take that advice personally

The advice is clear. Don't advertise a site not yet up and running. You could have waited a day or two and posted a link to a site which contained info. You didn't, so don't have a go at pvb for posting what seemed to me as being constructive criticism - if he'd just had a go, I'd comment on that, but he actually gave positive advice.

Re: My point exactly! . . .

fine, but you are in something of a minority on this thread so far. Do you want constructive criticism, or are you just arrogant - no offence, just a question.
