Seems that MBM is looking for a new Editor

http://www.ipcmedia.com/jobs/job.php?id=980

Anyone going to apply? TCM, maybe? Any brand-centric, media-neutral, off-line content providers out there fancy "a new challenge"? The ability not to laugh at the publisher when he says "easy wins and low-hanging fruit" at a brand strategy meeting will be a distinct advantage.

Will this mean another round of musical chairs at IPC? And why (and where) is Simon going after two years in the Big Chair?

Nothing gets past you, eh Tom?

Yes it's true, I'm leaving MBM. It's been great fun sitting in the Big Chair, but the time is right for me to pursue one or two other ambitions outside of journalism, before I get too old to do that kind of thing.

Will there be musical chairs at IPC? I'm as curious to find out as you are! There should be an announcement within a month or so, and then I'll be in a better position to deliver my valedictory address - complete with thanks to friends, family and forumites - and we can all discuss my Legacy and dig out that old photo where there's red wine everywhere and I look really silly.

In the meantime I'll just say I'm still here for another month, and I hope I've provided some distraction from the daily grind over the last couple of years. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Ambitions outside journalism? Surely journlaism is the ultimate ambition... 20 hour working weeks, four-hour lunches on expenses, lots of free stuff (which you can sell on eBay), loads of free trips, the attentions of grateful PR girls...there can't be a better way of earning aliving, even is the pay is rubbish.

Well, best of luck with your other projects...hope they work out for you.

Blimey, you boating hacks seem to have a shorter job life expectancy than football managers. No sooner have you lot got your feet under the desk then it seems that somebody else is waving another seven figure salary contract under your noses. What % do your agents earn?

Actually, most of us boating hacks hang around forever...it's just the Editors who crumble under the pressure (too many meetings, not enough boating). But even then, not all of them do...my predecessor sat in the Big Chair for 12 years, and one of MBY's early Editors (A. P. Chalkley) sat in the chair for 43 years, from 1912 to 1955 (he even produced the magazine from a gunboat on the Euphrates during WW1). Now THAT'S dedication.

They now do it from the saloon bar of the Hack and Hound, which is just as difficult.

[/ QUOTE ] Editors can't spell - that's why Magazines have Sub-Editors. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Nowadays, an Editor's job is to harvest low-hanging fruit, and run things up flagpoles, to see who salutes them.

Also required is an abilitiy to think outside the envelope, sit in on blue-sky focus clusters, deliver turn-key solutions to brand-centric initiatives, identify primary drivers for empty-nesting grey panthers, AND you're supposed to produce a magazine every month as well. Oh, and being able to tell the pointy end from the blunt end of a boat is quite handy.
