I shall be moving house next week.
I understand from the vendor that he has Sky, presumably a dish? He also has a second line for the computer (or PC)
I take it that this means dial up and therefore I need a modem
Please can buffs advise me?

Regards Briani

Could mean anything too be honest. Sky is used as a generic word for all digital tv like Hoover for vaccum cleaners so it might be on cable.

2nd line could be dial-up or ISDN (if it still exists, I got rid of mine 3 years ago).

Sky doesn't mean much except probably the absence of Cable locally. The second line means a pair of copper wires over which could be PSTN (modem for PC), ISDN/Highway (unlikely these days) or broadband. If its the former is a simple matter for around 99% of us to convert that to ADSL broadband now. Alternatively you could have broadband over the primary line & use this for ordinary voice calls and PC connection simultaneously in which case you may not need the second line.

Unless he's already got a PC running on broadband then it does sound like just 2 ordinary telephone lines. The sky aspect probably comes from the fact that to view any of the premium channels i.e. pay per view, there needs to be a telephone connection to the sky box.
How are you connecting at the moment? When I moved recently I was lucky enough to have a dial up modem built into my PC so ran on that for a couple of days until my broadband was swapped to new place.
If you get real stuck and are moving local, I'm not a million miles from Faversham so just holler if you need any help.

Unless you are sticking with cable you'll need at least a new modem. Do you just have one PC and, if so, will it be close to a BT socket?
FYI I am with Tiscali and have just swapped to their 2 meg connection with free landline calls included for £22 (IIRC) a month. No doubt someone will pipe up with a better deal /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif They also do a 1meg package with phone calls, free modem, connection, etc for £20.

Let me know if you get stuck.........
