Just been playing with a few samples from a friend who has set up a business supplying HID torches spotlights, conversion kits etc, went out with me bandq 990000000 candle thingy, then turned on the HID torch....jesus it was like daylight, has a lighting distance of 1.5 km and made mine look like the battery was flat!
One of those must have toys I think, will have to tap him for a discount though /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Brighter I think, these are 6000 luminums, 35 watt. 3 x brighter than halogen and use 50% less power.
Here are the pics

Maybe you have already got one or seen one in action, I hadnt, and was amazed by the brightness. Not saying there is anything special about these particular ones only that I havent seen them before in the shops.

£2,700 for a torch!!!!!!!!

I'll have one for the boat, another for the house, one for the car and another as a spare /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

They are common, and expensive, on diving sites. I've recently been looking at getting one for diving but need to justify several hundred quid for a torch.

There are some Youtube vids showing people igniting paper with the beam as they get that hot.

Bulb replacement costs are frightening as well.

HID is offered as an option for vehicle headlights on some models. I enquired if they were the blue ones that don't seem to be able to dip. Yes they are - because they are a discharge they can't be as accurate with the geometry so the difference between dipped and main beam can't be as well defined. So if you don't mind incurring the wrath of all on-coming drivers - get them. But I for one would rather you didn't.
