Hello everyone - I have recently paid but a few piunds for a small mayland 14 inc Outboard & trailer - I live in Leigh on Sea and wanted to know what are the optimum times for launching the boat due to the sometimes extreme tides. I.e what is that otimum tidal window.

Thanks

Welcome Matthew

You need chartd/pilot book & tide tables/almanac for the information you need. If you don't know what they, where to find them and how to use them I would respectfully suggest that you are not yet ready to go to sea.

Happy Boating

Don't forget to get there 20 mins early to sit and open the flask before launching. A coffee and a nosey at what is going on on the water. 20 minutes should ensure your trailer wheel bearings cool right back down and are safe to emerse in the oggin.

Failure to do this can have catatophic consequences on your way home for example. A hot beaing, even the sealed type will cool and contract very quickly when you back into the water, as it does this cold sea water will be sucked into the bearing races. Sea water has no place in a bearing race for obvious reasons.

Sorry, not trying to lecture, I just watch in amazement how many people launch within seconds of a long trip to the slip. Hope this helps.....

Thanks for your posts - I am familiar with the sea and almanac/tide timetables - I guess I was after some specific knowledge about the Thames estuary given that it sometimes floods/ebbs at an alraming rate - I guess I'll have to keep an eye on the shore to gauge what is safe - ( big potential for being left out on the mud inSouthend )

Thanks for the advice re: trailer I confess I hadn't thought about that one!!

The slipway at Two Tree Island behind leigh on sea station ia usable for a good part of the tide. You'll have to check though as work on the island may mean the slipway is closed for parts of this coming summer.
