Still quite new to sailing and find myself in need of a new furling Genoa as the one I have is as baggy as you can get, leech line torn out of the sail and has been patched all over the place. I have had a quote from a local sailmaker for a custom made sail approx 285 sq ft, to be cut a little higher, foam luff and all the bits and pieces, price came in at £1100 all in. Didnt know it would cost that much but have used them before for a new mainsail and other bits and like their work. Just wondered if there was any mileage in shopping around for a cheaper price.

You have allready said you like thier work. I like using my local sailmaker as if there are any problems they can be sorted out very quickly. They can also come down to the boat and have a look. yes you may be able to order one cheaper but if it's delivered and it is not right....

Chris

p.s.- like the signature !

Similar size and very similar price to one I bought about 4 years ago in cruising laminate from Kemps. This is a good time of year to buy as they're not busy.

Yes, shop around, or just ask for a discount. The sailmakers will often go down 15-20% from their first price if you push them, and business is slow now, so it should not be hard to get a reduction. Sail making is one of those businesses where the lofts generally expect to negotiate with you.
