Hi folks just wondered if any one has a PRM 80 gearbox thinking of replacing my worn out hurth 50 with one.A little bit of messing about but the PRM is probably heavier duty and a good bit cheaper and made in Britain.Would like to hear of anyones thoughts on this:)

My PRM80 came with the Beta 1050 attached to it. Since 2004 never needed to worry about it, does what it does without fuss.

Hi Woody

The Hurth HBW 50 and HBW 100 gearboxes plus the ZF10M gearboxes which replaces them 'all' go 'into gear' with a 'clunk', which I am told by many is normal ??? (I still cannot understand why!)

Does the PRM80 also go into gear with a 'clunk'???

As I recall these are the mechanical Hurths-having had one in bits worth trying to explain.
Basically operation of lever causes a sudden torque back lash in gearbox which in turn causes a collar to screw forward causing a series of detent ball bearings to drop in and lock input to output shaft -balls which in neutral freely run in a grove between gears and collar.
Thus what you have is a mechanical lock between input and output.
The little clutch plates little more than two inches in diameter operate the system.
Basically the gearbox uses its own torque to throw in and lock the gears together.
