Looking into replacing fuse board on westerly 22, what are the correct lighting indications required at night during sailpower and motor. Hopefully i can save switch space by combing some
Sail - Tricolour (if fitted) or NAv Lts (Bi Colour and Stern Lt)
Power - Nav Lts and Steaming Light
As you are just under 7m you cab actually just use an allround white I wouldn't reccomend
Therfore you should be able to get away with two switches:
A SPDT(CO)i.e. three positions On - Off - ONselecting Nav Lts and Tricolour and
A SPST for the Steaming Lts (This is an On/Off)
Plus one for the Anchor Light. These are available in suitable ratings from Maplin.
Joanie,
If you don't know what lights you should show at night,
should you be out at sea at night?
Suggest you buy "Rule of the Road" book for Christmas.
A perfectly fair question, ignoring the sniping.
On my Jouet 680 (22ft) I have:-
An Steaming light 2/3rds up the mast, which has its own switch
A masthead triclour with anchor white light, which each have a switch. ( I dont use the anchor light see below!)
As suggested by salamicollie, you can save space by having multi position switches, which are available from Maplins and other places.
You would save one switch (and a lot of battery power) if you considered:-
a) a solar powerd garden all round light - about 7 quid
b) a hurricane lamp - about 7 quid
hoisted up the forestay or into the spreaders when anchoring overnight,
I use a hurricane lamp with meths, as it is reliable and cheap to run, and also serves as heat when used in the cabin! There was some debate about how long the solar garden lights last, but in mid summer evenings, it is necessary for less time anyway! This time of year, hurricane lamp is the option to go for.
I use the Lalizas 12m Tricolour, as it is about 12 quid, as opposed to 40-99 quid for some of the big boys kit. Perfectly adequate, and conforms to regulations for sub 12 metre boats.
As you are renewing the fuse board, should you not be looking to rewire the boat? Fairly simple, and I have 12v idiots guide of you PM me. As you can probably guess I did all of this work this year!
Hello Jimdew re Meths in a hurricane lamp. I had once one of those cookers (for camping) that was designed to use kerosene and had a large circular wick. I mounted it in the boat and decided to use meths because it has a better smell. After a short period of operation the flames were leaping up to the cabin roof and I emptied a BCF fire extinguisher (now banned) onto it after the flames had gone out I stopped the extinguisher and shortly after it was flaring up again. My theory is that meths has too low evaporation temp compared to kerosene and that the tank got hot and there was very little air seal above the tank to the wick area. The box I mounted the cooker in may have exacerbated the problem. What I am trying to say is be very carefull of meths in a wick type burner It was very emabarrasing for me. (hurricane lamp may be better sealed or not run so hot). Happy Christmas will
