I want to add a furler for our staysail. It is not a huge sail but is an 8mm stay. Yankee has a Furler furler which is fine but expensive. Looking for a more cost effective option. Choices?

We have Alado furlers on our yankee and staysail. They are robust and work well and can be fitted and removed without going up the mast. See their website alado.com

Don't think any of the readily available "cheap" furlers such as Plastimo go up to 8mm. However maybe 8mm is OTT for the application. Maybe best to talk to a good rigger about the options.

I'll second Alado - I have one for my genoa - robust, easy to fit, simple design, lower cost than pretty much any alternative. The quoted price is what you'll pay and it includes delivery and all customs handling, duties & VAT. Good support by email or phone and rapid dispatch of parts by Andre in Brazil. What's not to like?

Last winter replaced a long-troublesome (and several expensive repairs in 14 years) Facnor furler with a Bamar. Rigger suggested it as a slightly cheaper option than Furlex or top-end Harken which were the other two suggestions. The rigger said the Harken was probably the best of the lot, but the most expensive. So far the Bamar works smoother than the old Facnor ever did even when new.

This on a modern 15/16ths rig 35-footer. I did seriously consider Alado for simplicity and cheapness, but it just looked too "agricultural" for a modern boat. Might work well for a Golden Hind staysail though.

As I'm sure you know your 8mm stay on the staysail is probably well OTT for a quite small sail and rig loads. The thickest stay on my 35-footer is 7mm, on a boat with much more sail area. At 7mm you could use the biggest Plastimo furler, which my rigger said was just not powerful enough for my genoa - possibly 6 times the area of a GH staysail. That's probably a third of the price of a Furlex, and at least they sell spare parts at sensible-ish prices.

Sailspar furlers; have staysail and yankee on 8mm stays on them. Fitted one for the yankee on my previous catamaran, which is why I then fitted them when rerigging my current boat. They have a continuous line for controlling the sail so much easier to handle than the thin strings used to furl other gears.
