If you're contemplating upgrading your compressor and evaporator plate to a more modern unit then I'd advise not to hesitate, go do it. I thought about it for too long but this spring took the plunge and spent £750 for a new frigoboat "paris 35" kit from penguin engineering. Expensive maybe, but what a difference! Much more efficient, drawing only 3A compared to the old unit at 5A and it seems to cycle at a lower rate too so power consumption is well down, by as much as half I reckon. The old unit was the original 1995 unit so it was time-served. The heat exchanger seems to be the big difference, it is constructed of many thin aluminium fins rather like a car radiator whereas the old unit was just a simple wire grid arrangement. I should have done it five years ago, well worth the time and effort. Penguin Engineering very helpful.

I fitted a Frigoboat 35 system last year and, agreed, it much more efficient than the old system. Only problem is the noisy fan on the heat exchanger, but I've replaced it with a "silent" computer fan. Much better!
BTW I paid a lot less than £750 in France, though it is probably a different unit ... ...

Just installed a Frigoboat with keel cooler. Much more energy efficient than the old girl...

Expensive but worth it for me. Your experience may vary....:D
