New forehatch wood/glass

I own an Eventide 26 constructed marine ply on oak and would like to give her a new forehatch and perhaps sliding main hatch. I really like the look of the greenhouse style which lets in a lot of light but am unsure of the strength of the construction. Does anyone have any advice/guidance or perhaps is aware of a book or other publication which may have drawings and/or construction details.

I remember seeing an article on the construction of one in Wooden Boat magazine some years ago, but it was more of a tribute to the woodworking skills of the craftsman who made it. I can look through my archives if you like and give you an issue number and page reference if I can find it.

In my opinion you would have to be careful of not making something too fussy on a 26 foot boat.

Maurice Griffiths designed an excellent watertight forehatch which would be highly appropriate for an Eventide. I'm sure that you would be able to get drawings of it from the Eventide Owner's Association. A simple bronze deadlight found at a Boat Jumble let into the top of such a hatch would give you all the light that you would want, and be stronger than a batwing skylight.

I agree, I have two of the "batwing" type hatches, but they are sheltered, strong anyway, but a flat hatch with deadligt would be fine, you could even use one of those "grapefruit" type prisms, which are like a 200watt bulb when the sun is shining!

There is a drawing of the Maurice Griffiths GM design in one of Hiscock's books, Cruising under Sail. (I write Maurice Griffiths GM because that's how Hiscock describes him)

Greetings Chris - Its a small world! - I've spent last couple of hours digging out info which I knew I'd seen somewhere. Classic Boat ran a two part article on making a new skylight (hinged window type), in May and June 1990. Regretably I only have the June issue and will forward a copy - (anyone out there with the May issue ???). It is very detailed and will test your carpentry skills! - I'll also copy relevant detailed drawings of my set of Eventide plans which clearly illustrate the MG type forehatch and runners for main hatch. Also have acquired an excellent little publication 'Building Chine Boats' by Michael Verney which has a little info but some excellent drawings, again relevant copies on their way.
I am assuming you are still at the same address on IOW, if not let me know.
Borer Bee is still a long way off getting back under sail, but is in long term storeage whilst the slow job of sandpapering takes place.

Chris, did a bit more digging around some more books and found another good illustration of the forward Maurice Griffiths hatch in MG's book 'Dream Ships'.
I'll copy it tomorrow and add to the other copies which will be in the post Saturday.
Great excuse to get a rumage through the nautical stuff again !!
