new fenders best place to buy

Ordered mine with old style FL logo from Bates Wharf along with OEM tails. Very nice they look too...

yup, I just ordered 8 socks off him. He's in Genoa today but responsive as ever.

+1 again for Dud. He supplied me with some blue printed fenders many years ago but sadly he cant do those now for small runs. He did some printed fender socks 18 months ago which have been great.

I've always had very good service and prices for my fenders from Compass Marine:-

+1 for Compass Marine. Full set of fenders for my previous two boats were very well priced. Just received a new set of fender socks and dock lines from them.
A very nice family company to work with.

They had a slight delay in making my fender socks up, so hand delivered them to my home on a Sunday! (OK I know I am local to them, but that kind of service goes a long way in my book).

Sorry for a numpty question. But can anyone enlighten me as to why the bog standard fenders from the local chandlery would be considered inferior? Genuine question.

Nothing wrong with that at all providing they all match, otherwise it looks a bit of a mess IMO. It is however acceptable to have a couple of non matching balloons at the bows I reckon.

In my case I had 5 original FL branded fenders and therefore we bought another 4 to match them (I do have a couple of smaller ones that I use at the stern but it's better not to be to anal about these things :)). I have 11 in total for my 34 footer.

Tails (must be spliced) and socks should all be matching too (I used my Rollneck sock material and managed to cover 8 fenders out of a pack).

11 fenders for 34 foot! Good lord. I have 3 plus a mobile unit that sit with the crew member handling the lines if a bump looks imminent. I would not be able to store much more without having my guard rails festooned with more baskets at the price of visibility underway. I need to change my fenders. I think they are plastimo and an odd size that dont fit in the basket and I need to question you about your covers and the grit I'm picking up with the sea foam generated in the estuary. They are abrading the striping lines and I wonder if socks will help mitigate this or make it worse.

Why do the bigger fenders cost so much?

A decent size ball fender to protect my stern when parked stern to, costs as much as my inflatable tender! And the tender is much bigger (and would do the job just as well).

As I said, I have 4+1 on each side and 1 stopping the stern from hitting the pontoon. It doesn't look over the top and SWMBO jams most of them between the guard rails and the coachroof (lots of Targa owners do this I suspect).

Regarding socks, some of the towelling socks do hold sand and grit so can abrade the boat I'm told. My material is quite tightly woven so less of an issue I would hope (I've never had a complaint). I've recently fitted some to my boat so will be interested to see how long it lasts. What you might want to do is check that your old fenders haven't become sticky. That would potentially give you a grit issue.
