I currently have a Volvo MD3B which needs major surgery. Labour and parts are going to be rather a large amount So I have decided to investigate a new engine. I have been recommended a Beta Marine BV1505 37.5hp.

My criteria are:

1. Reliability
2. Ease and simplicity of servicing
3. Availbility and cost of spares

What would you fit to a Fisher 30 ? Are there any good sites with commentary on different makes ?

Hi - my MD2B gave up the ghost last year and I had a similar dillema to you (I think there are some posts about it). After weighing up all of the options and talking to alot of people, I fitted a Beta BD1005 - it is 28hp and is more than adequate for my 32 ft, 4,500kg boat. In comparison to my volvo it is a delight. All in, it was a shade under £7,000 to fit. The one piece of advice I would give is shop around - i found companies offering between 10% and 20% of the list price for the new engine.

I hope this helps,

Tom

i have the Nanni version
its very good & gives the same out-put @ 2700Rpm as the original Perkins 4108,
infact i have had to increase the prop pitch by 3 ins to get the revs down to 2800 rpm . its now done 280 hrs
boat 37 ft sloop disp 7 tons 7.5 kts with clean bottom

I would endorse the previous post: go for a BETA marine: I fitted the BD722 (3 cyl, 20 bhp) to our 32ft, 5 ton displacement yacht two years ago and found it more than adequate with a 14" x 10", 2-blade folding prop. If the Fisher 30 is heavier than our 5 tons, you might want to install more power, but what you can use is limited by the maximum prop size and shaft anyway, so no point in over-horsing!. Good luck!

Just fitted a Beta BD1005 28Hp to a Fisher 25, smaller, smoother, quieter and cheaper to run. Great little motor and would hesitate to recommend them.

Colin Jones of PBO re-engined his Colvic Watson not long ago and wrote about the planning and installation experiences in detail.

I think his decision path would be highly applicable to your yacht.

Thank you all - I put a similar post on the Fisher Owners group and it appears a couple of people have put them in instead of Volvo replacements. All very good and positive feedback thanks.
