The old Sabb 10GG is getting close to complete overhaul and Gearbox needs adjusting.Have you seen the price of Spares for this animal.
Have choice between new Yanmar2ym15,Beta16(BZ602),VetusM206 or Nann2.50.Not much in Price. What does the team Think?Cost to overhaul Sabb about 40%
of replacement.Maybe get rid of the earplugs?

When my old Mariner 20 needed a fair chunk spending on it, I part ex'd it for a new Mercury.

Try upgrading your Sabb, and Ebaying it as a 'running engine'

Which it is! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm not able to comment about the differences between the engines you list, however my approach is to find other owners of sister ships and find out which they have fitted and see how they have found them......sod's law seems to suggest that an engine that has worked well in one application might react differently in a different installation.
Sorry, not a lot of help I suppose.

The vetus may have an aft facing raw water pump, some do.It can be a nightmare to replace an impeller at sea.
The Nanni has the same base engine as the Beta but it is more expensive.Betas are very good with very good spares and parts support from the company.

They will all do a good job for you and last well if looked after.
In my opinion it depends largely how you use your engine. Most of the so called "marine" engines are built for fairly light duty but a marinised industrial engine will usually have bigger bearings and more robust build quality although it might be slightly heavier. If you want an engine that will take really heavy duty punishment the Vetus gets my vote being based on a Mitsubishi industrial diesel that has been fitted to plant, equipment, dump trucks etc worldwide and has a reputation of being virtually indestructable. I have a 4.15 that I frankly beat the hell out of but maintain properly. I fitted it new 7 years ago and it is still good as new. If you only use your engine occasionally under light load though I would not worry and look at price above everything. On price I would say include a panel with any of them that has at least a rev counter ammeter, voltmeter and oil pressure gauge. Basic panels don't.

I think they're all good engines but I plan to replace my 20yr old Yanmar with another Yanmar.
Theyd do seem to be incredibly reliable, and also easy to bleed if you're prone to running low on fuel.

You should do some measuring to make sure that it will be a drop in replacement. We chose a Beta for our previous boat (Snappie 26) because they were well (and properly) recommended. The adjustable feet made it easy to fit but it was taller than the old petrol engine and I had to alter the step to accommodate it. Other than that - excellent.

Must admit the Beta gets my vote. The Albin Vega Association now has over 120 fitted as replacement for the old Volvo MD6A and MD7A diesels.

Not a problem, good aftersales from Beta, spares worldwide.

IMHO

Should that not be that the Albin Vega Association have negotiated a special deal from Beta rather than 'Beta gets my vote'? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
