I want to apply a coveline stripe to my hull roughly about 4 inches below the toerail. Is it as simple at measuring down the same distance from the toerail and drawing a line to align the tape against. I realise this will not be level with the water line as would be needed with a boot stripe but it looks like that is how most of the boats in the yard are done.
Any recommendations?

That is exactly what I did & it looks fine. I was in a dinghy & just went along the side with a ruler & marked the hull with a fine board marker about every 500mm. I did not draw a full line along the hull, just marks at intervals. Then starting at the left hand end (I am right handed,) I then stuck down the end + a bit spare & just pulled the boat along with left hand, while holding the coveline tape in right, and just sticking it at every mark. Then went back with a soft cloth to press it all down. Followed that by trimming the ends to a nice point. It is easy to get a fair curve jusy by eye. The most important thing is to ensure that the hull is clean & dry. I used fresh water wash and dry using a chamois leather, followed by a rub with a cloth moistened with methylated spirits. Some people use small drip of paint thinners instead of meths. If I knew how to insert a picture I could show you the result, but suffice to say it did not take long, looks good & is still there 3 years on.
Best of luck with yours.

to get a marker on our moody we made a wood triangle with a ledge along top and a hole in the point .The ledge on the triangle fitted on toe rail and we ran along hull with pencil in point of triangle .Stripe looks perfect .
