Hi All,

I looked at cookers this last weekend intending to buy a Nelson Spinflo but my eyes were caught by a Waeco Smev/Dometic Starlight 2.
The Waeco oven is slightly larger; the gimbals allow a bigger saucepan/frying pan; it has more powerful (and uneven) hobs (2.2/1.8 vs 1.5KW) and it has a built-in anti swing device. It's also slightly cheaper.
The Nelson has higher output oven and grill (1.5/1.5KW vs 1.1/1.3KW) and as far as I have found the Nelson has great reviews from all users.

Are there any Starlight users prepared to give me a review?

Thanks

I recently "surveyed" these cookers and ended up buying a Dometic moonlight. You can read a lot on the liveaboard link where the subject was discussed. My personal view is that the Nelson has a big failing in that all of the hob workings including delicate sensor wires are exposed under the grill. Imagine what it would look like after grilling bacon! Impossible to clean. There is an issue about the burner caps being stainless too. I managed to pick up my moonlight cheaply as it is an old model with stainless caps but the new one has enamelled (assume mild steel) ones. Retrograde step in my opinion. If you need one with a separate grill look underneath the Starlight and compare with the Nelson. The Moonlight has the grill in the oven. Much better in my opinion but its your choice. Of the 2 you mentioned I would choose the Dometic. Apart from quality they are a big company and you can always get spares.

Had a Nelson Spinflo for a couple of years now and a great oven, big advantage for me is you can also control the oven heat when cooking which on some is not so easy.

A Nelson was fitted to my boat when I got it. Not that impressed. Nearly impossible to clean. Oven cooks unevenly and has very poor insulation (and for that I would not worry too much about the difference in oven burner output - the Nelson loses a lot).. However the grill is not bad. I will be looking very careful at the Domestic when I come to replace it in a couple of years.
