Chichester Harbour Master has a new White GRP Twin Hull launch.
Twin outboards with cuddy cabin.

They appear tolerant to speeding.
We came in today and he followed us closely from East Stoke point.

While following us a fishing boat went out at an estimated 12 knots.

An orange RIB came from a dinghy race and headed back to HISC at an estimated 25 knts and a third RIB again from the direction of the Sailing race was cruising at about 17 knots.

The new HM launch continued to follow us before turning off toward Sparks / HISC.

The situation about speeding boats in Chi Harbour is daft. I contacted them about why they were so tolerant of people who take no notice of the regulations.

To my surprise, the reply I received said that it actually cost them more to prosecute offenders than they received in revenue. Hence they only do so in the most extreme cases.

Unlike traffic speed cameras - Chi Harbour have to employ legal beagles to prosecute the cases, and its a long drawn out process. So most speeders get away with it.

Shame really, as IMHO its a very sensible speed limit.

It seems a reasonable approach - if you are being dangerous with your speeding then they'd probably stop you .. otherwise you'll likely to get away with it ...
At this time of year the harbour is relatively empty .. so a couple of boats going faster than they are supposed to really doesn't make much difference ...

I but I did have permission and was flying the required flags

What flags? What were you doing? And where?

I dont know how many blatant and dangerous breaches they witness, but they always seemd damn officious to me. Unless you were in a lerge boat, in which case they totally ignored you.

If you are to officially speed in Chichester Harbour you need written permission from the Harbourmaster and you must display 2 code flags, I can't remember the flags though.

Speeding is only allowed in a specific 1/2 mile marked area once permission is given.

I was sea trialling the Azimut so permission had been gained for me.

spoke to the HM in Itchenor las year and they prefer their ribs to the new white launch, they say it's hard work to use especially when they have to collect harbour dues!

Did your toilet pipe go on OK ? Nice to meet you saturday, sadly we didn't get out, daughter very sick.

[/ QUOTE ] So they are quite blatant that the main reason is revenue collection - just like speed cameras.

New loo working fine , thanks /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You would have herd it I am sure but from a cable away you could have mistaken it for an Air raid warning siren /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I think the problem of being stuck in the middle of a raft wanting an early start has been resolved /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hope your family are well again soon.

cheers

Well - if it is going to cost more to prosecute someone than they get back in fines then I'd rather they didn't prosecute everyone ... cos the harbour fees would have to go up to cover the increased cost!
However, the downside is that ppl chance speeding because they are unlikely to get prosecuted... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

We came in yesterday lunchtime and found a yacht in distress in the main channel through the Itchenor reach. His engine had just blown up. We tied him up alongside and towed him back to his mooring. At the same time, (this is the first time I've ever seen this) a power boat with a load of lads on, came through the reach at full planing speed, (right in front of the harbourmasters office aswell) completely oblivious to everything that was going on.

Where is he when you want him, I wonder?

Agreed. We move back to Northney permanently in a few weeks and the only thing that I'm not looking forward to are the nitwits ignoring the speed limit and causing problems. For example, my son was knocked off his feet once last year by some twat in a fishing boat that went steaming past half on the plane that I hadn't spotted coming up on us. Even if folk aren't prosecuted there's no reason why the HM can't stop and warn at least the worst miscreants and threaten them with prosecution. They have prosecuted over recent years so the threat should carry some weight.
