New canvas at Titchmarsh

I needed to replace the 16-year-old sprayhood & cockpit enclosure on my Dehler 35. On the recommendation of an ECF-er, I included Jeckells in the list of 10 'quoters' (including those mentioned) to whom I sent sketches, measurements and required material specs.

Jeckells stood out because a) they took the trouble to visit the boat before quoting, and b) they quoted very competetively.

They've made the items 2 weeks after a further (detailed) measure -up of the boat and are doing the 'first fit' tomorrow, so I'm quite impressed so far.

I'll let you know.

Was very impressed at the boat show this year with Jeckells. Showed me a sample of a ready made sail and fully explained how they build it and why.

Two weeks later I gave them the order for the sail. The sail was delivered this week . Like Rudolph_hart, impressed so far.

Another vote for Jeckells. They did a spray hood for us this winter. They took time to measure up properly and come and fit it, all when they said they'd do it. It looks super! I didn't pay the bill though, so I don't know how it compares to other suppliers.
[No connection etc]

Jeckells are meeting me at Bradwell tomorrow afternoon to measure up to quote for a sprayhood and enclosure so I'll be interested to know how yours is going. They seem anxious to make what you want rather than C&J who just said "this is what it is like and it will cost XXXX" no discussion.

I had the most awful experience with Jeckells. The sprayhood didn't fit and covered the eber outlet. I've had to pay a rigger to refit the boom so that the darn sprayhood fits and pay a sailmaker to recut the sprayhood. All through this the after sales from Jeckells could not be described as a "service".

Yes, first measurement, then he called back himself to check a couple of measurements; meantime we had raised the end of the boom about 3 feet so we could more easily get on and off the aft deck - he used that as the measurement - said he thought it looked very odd but we should have left the boom how we wanted it?????? Said he hadn't noticed the eberspacher exhaust on his visit and had we just had it fitted - no, fitted 2 years ago, now completely covered by your sprayhood "are you sure it was there when I measured?"

Interesting. From Jeckell's web site:
Do you make upholstery and Spray hoods?
No we do not, but we can put you in touch with some of the countries leading upholsterers and cover makers. Please email us and advise where your boat is and what you require so we can give you the best advice.

Update

Peter is coming to see me.

Pasta Simon - did you have a first fitting that Rudolph refers to as I assume that is to make sure it fits properly. A bit worrying that.
Two chaps I've dealt with are Andrew, who seems to be office-based, and Colin, who visited the boat for the 3rd time today, to establish the exact placing of the fasteners (old one had Minax, but I'm having Perfix ones fitted this time).

Colin had fitted the spray hood, and it looks good.

He'll return for a 4th time, after fitting the Perfix fasteners back at the workshop, to fit the finished articles.

I'm off at stupid o'clock tomorrow for some ski-ing in the Sodomites (Sella Ronda) for a week, so I'll update again after that.

They must be capable of getting a fair proportion of their sprayhoods right otherwise they wouldn't be in business. It wasn't them getting it wrong that bothered me, we all make mistakes, it was their lack of service afterwards. Their solution for correcting the low height of the sprayhood was to suggest I re-cut my main giving it a higher kick-up angle
That was shortly before I lost patience

Wilkinsons Sails (Conyer) who made the stackpack also made a mistake on initial measurement and popped out to do a re-sew and refit. As I result I recommended them to several new customers when we lived in Kent.

I am in Titchmarsh and need new canvas for my sprayhood, cockpit enclosure, dodgers and stack pack on Bene 311. I want quality at a good price, as do we all! Any recommendations, please?

Email sales@slcupholstery.co.uk and if you want a look at workmanship come and look at my Sunseeker on berth B2.

Graham was very patient and as an (ex)boatowner he had a good insight into what works and what doesn't.

Jeckells and your confusion

Is it still Chris Jeckells doing the measuring & fitting?

Must say I've found his work to be excellent in the past.

So have I, he, Chris Jeckells, came to measure my boat for a full set of sails, he came with his wife on a Saturday afternoon and ws in no hurry to leave me. I have the sails and they are every bit as good as he said.

I asked him to make me a sprayhood but he told me that was a separate company Jeckells the Upholster's not his company Jeckells the Sailmakers and he would not get involved with it. His uncle does those, not sure if that is Peter or Andrew but my boat was too far away for them.
Hope this gives you the answers to your question

Following on from my last post on this, I can report that the Sprayhood and canopy for my Dehler 35 were delivered by the boss to my office. I fitted them last weekend and they fitted well, were good quality, and the price remained within that quoted.

The fact that they took the trouble to visit the boat before quoting was the reason I gave them the job (that and a comptetive quote). They were also happy to do a few extra bits at reasonable cost (e.g. adapt the existing zip-in net side-panels to the new canopy).

All in all a proper job.:)
