2017 sees two new companies join SYH's on-site partner businesses. Evolution Rigging and Seapower Marine Electronics will be valuable additions to the existing services and facilities at the marina.

I heard that Rig Magic was being bought up by No1 sails.

John Gill, boat electrician and panel maker, who many of you will know in the SYH area was given a couple of weeks to live a month ago.
The current treatment has reduced the tumor by 50% and current prog is now a year at least.

Javelin is clearly well informed - I know that, before his illness put a stop to work, JG used to do 1 or 2 days a week at Harbour Marine Services. I know you'll never replace him, but hope you find someone good to take on the work he used to do.

While things seem to be going better than the prognosis he was given (grabbing the desk hard) he has stopped working (not before time) and surrendered the lease on his workshop at SYH. Apart from being the best marine electrician in the country, John is a great man to know and always good for a yarn.

The new Evoluton Rigging is owned by John Parker (of Parker & Kay / Onesails fame) who has taken on the lease of the building where Rig Magic used to operate from and taken on the two former employees of Rig Magic, who were made redundant when that business failed. Seapower Marine Electronics have taken on the lease of the building formerly leased by R&J marine electronics, which also failed at the end of last year. Ollie Ballam will be offering both electrical and electronic work on boats - one of his jobs will be to wire up Wild Thyme's bow thruster once Josh has it installed this spring.

It all goes to show that these are tough times for businesses operating in the leisure sector, it's obviously the first part of the economy which suffers when belts are tightened - you don't cut back on essentials first, do you.

We count ourselves fortunate at SYH that, over the winter,we have managed to find businesses to replace the partner businesses which failed in providing services essential to our customers.

You will find an announcement about the 2 new businesses on our website:

I wasn't aware that John was ill.

He did a great job on Rose of Wight's switch panel back in 2005.

I'm not berthed at SYH at the moment.

Please pass on my best wishes to him.

Will do - I'm sure he'll be pleased to hear from yet another happy customer. The only unhappy customer John ever had was a certain Mr Blyth, who didn't want to pay when John had done a complete rewire on one of his earlier RTW boats.

Saw John yesterday and he was in fine form considering.
He's lost maybe 3 or 4 stone and looking better for it.

Perhaps this mr Blyth was the "snotgobbling weasel yachtie" he harks on about every now and then.

Could be, but the Mr Blyth who made his name by going the "wrong way" RTW can also be pretty scathing about yotties - certainly wouldn't like being referred to as one o them himself!

Good to hear that JG's looking well in the circumstances.
