I find that I need a new bung (docking plug to some!) and was wondering what wood to use. The boat is Mahogany planks over oak frames and the old bung is very tatty and I cannot identify the timber it is made from.

Should I use Mahogany or a softwood?

two schools af thought here, use hardwood, which doesn't swell when wet so you can et it out, but it may weep or softwood which will swell when wet and not leak, but can be a bugger to get out. i'd go for the mahogany. IMHO
