Spent an exhausting day on Sunday unloading 4 years of clobber from the boat. Unfortunately she was on the hard at the time, so all had to be lowered down a ladder.
Following a change in boating requirements, and some influence from the threatened taxation of marine diesel, we decided to part company with the Broom. She really has been the best sea boat we have owned with the combination of weight and power being hard to beat, but totally unsuited to life on the non tidal Thames at 4.5 kts. The new owners intend to keep her at Burnham on Crouch, which will suit her much better.
We have been looking at the Nimbus range as a possible replacement. Probably the 345/350. It seems well screwed together and well finished and in many ways not disimilar to the Broom. Somewhat skinnier and with a rear cockpit, no comparison in internal accommadation but that was the style we decided on.
It has 2 x Yanmar (230hp) 4LH STE 4 cylinder diesel inboards which have done 370 hrs in 4 years. The entire boat is immaculate and the engines seem like new. We are doing a sea trial at the weekend and would be interested if anyone has interesting/ useful comments about these engines/ boats.
We are not new to boat ownership so general comments on sea trial techniques are not really sought.

Many thanks in advance.

Thats alot of engine for the river. I had 2 of those on my last boat with Bravo 1 drives. Did over 5 knots on tickover and 55 knots WOT. Originally it had Bravo 3's but got whiplash just engaging gear. On the upside they were very economical using 45 litres per hour at 30 knots cruise.

How can the 250Hp Yanmars be much of a saving on the Taxed Diesel?

What did you have in the Broom - 306's??

I agree, the Nimbus are great boats, would be my choice for the "Next one" too, but I would miss the flybridge terribly - especially for the boat handling competitions!!!!! (Wont it be difficult to give/receive crew instructions from inside the wheelhouse?)

Will you have it in time for ATYC?

Thanks for the response.
Having managed 600 hp on the river in the Broom, 460 will be a doddle!

As for being a saving if the tax goes on marine diesel, I understand that the Yanmars are remarkably economical and the TAMD61A's were certainly not.

I shall be crewing at ATYC but will not have the boat there. I have more or less pensioned myself off from skippering, but if the mood so took I feel the intercom could easily be used to attract the crew! "IN YOUR OWN TIME DEAR....?!"
