New boat sellers doing themselves no favours

So I am interested in buying a new boat for the first time ever. I would like the Saxdor 205 which various people suggest is £32k. Well after quite a lot of research this price is a total lie. The boat they show is never the one you can buy that is £32k. It is one with loads of extras that seems it would be more like £54k. Not the way to market a product.

I have the money to pay cash but this type of marketing has totally put me off and I have now stopped looking

It has always been the way that the headline price is not realistic , but Looks like you can buy a 1 ish year old one for about 40k, so how about that?

Right or wrong, this is normal practice and has been for a long time. Not only on boats either.

It’s possibly worse with sailing boats.

( I think they do come with 2 basic sails 😀)

And it can be expensive to fit stuff retrospectively and not necessarily done so well.

Take note!

Colin Chapman had the right idea back in the 1960s/70.
His Moonraker boats were turnkey and go, came complete with every thing you needed down to a mop and bucket, even in some cases a spare pair of props.
He also regarded a TV and Fridge as standard kit. Important to Mrs Boatbuyer, might just secure a sale.
Possible you can still get a " starter" Princess or Fairline for under £500k ?

Everybody has to start somewhere.

That’s standard marketing practice these days in everything we buy. Have you ever specced up a BMW or Mercedes? A friend of mine worked for a big property developer years ago. They always built a block of apartments with one 1 bed apartment so that the marketing bumph could say from 199k when the 2 beds all started at 260k.

BP, the alleged "lie" apart, I'm more interested in your fleet expanding again and with a possible new boat (what!!?) . 2 thread drifts to work on for us.

There should be a new thread where we value BP’s fleet and see what we can buy with the proceeds:)

Who were the "various people"? Surely the starting point is the published price list which will make it clear what you are getting for any given price. Sure the "headline" starting price is intended to attract attention but you must be pretty naive to think you can buy a boat (or car) ready to go for that price.

Having bought 2 new boats I can confirm the basic list price as little connection to the final price, particularly if part exchange is involved, or in both my purchases foreign currency.

Suggesting this is not the way to market a product is just not correct. You ignore the sophistication of buyers at this level who are well aware that it is a starting point to give an idea where in the price hierarchy a particular boat sits.

You can buy one without any options for £32k if you want something very basic. What's the problem?

Normal I would say...Who are the various people you refer to? I have bought two new boats and I always start with the standard price i.e. what comes with the boat and then a long list of options, once that has all been decided you explore discounts or incentives...in my experience the boat price was cheaper than what was published in the sales brochures. Also, have you actually contacted them to discuss the prices and see what the sales person may offer etc.

If you are not prepared to pay £54k, then you are not their target market.
Boat sellers know exactly what they are doing, in most cases.

There are a few Saxdors for sale at around 32K that would probably have most of the extras you want if you would be prepared to buy a 2021 model.....any bugs would have been sorted as well. Just a thought....(boatsandoutboards)

Spot on. 13 years ago I bought a brand new 62 foot flybridge, very basic, good price, got it at price advertised. Over the years I have saved enough for steering wheel, all the electronics, sink etc and hopefully port engine arriving in the next few weeks to go with starboard which I got 8 years ago. Bigplumps, it's not a problem just get the other stuff as and when.

You're right, but problem is that you might be cutting off your nose to spite your face. I don't think anyone pays the advertised "base" price to buy a boat or a car anymore. Imho at least, you just have to choose not to care about it and just get on with the transaction (if you actually want the transaction).
