I have just purchased a new (very old) boat. It has a tag on back Manufactured by Sterling Craft Ltd. I am have trouble finding information on it. Year of manufacture, care etc etc. It has Johnson VR60 engine on back which we managed to start.
Some information would be appreciated.

Sterling Craft were one of many small builders from the 1970s. Quite common to have no form of identification or indication of when it was built. Nothing special about care - its a GRP boat just like many others.

Thank you for prompt reply. I tried looking for similar boats all over to get an idea of value etc but nothing.

Is their a website where these sorts of boats are bought and sold I can find out value etc.

Boats vary so much that values are mostly guesswork. As suggested Boats and Outboards and Apollo duck have listings of lots of boats and you might find something similar to yours there.

True say. So what do you reckon the Johnson VR60 outboard is worth?

Can you supply more details. VR60 is not a listed model number ( those I have found beginning VR date from around 1930.)

There should be an ID plate on the port side transom bracket. The model number stamped on there will precisely identify the engine

Sorry it is the VRO 60 model

But what age? The model number will tell us the exact year!

Does it still have the VRO in operation......... mostly people converted the early ones to premix.

from 1989 IIRC the improved VRO2 was fitted ....... it will have a "no oil flow alarm" on it if its a VRO2

From 1993 they were called OMS ( oil metering system). A desperate attempt to get away from the stigma of VRO I guess.

Run it with 50:1 premixed fuel until you are certain that the VRO is working correctly. The extra oil wont hurt. Its the recommended thing to do

BJ60TLCCR is what is on outboard.

BJ60TLCCR is what is on outboard.

Its a 1988 60hp longshaft with power tilt and trim

B = Made in Belgium
J = Johnson
60 = 60hp
T= Tilt and trim
L = Long shaft
CC = '88
R is a production suffix

The VRO (variable rate oiling) system assuming it is still installed and in operation is a VRO2 ......... the improved version developed following the problems with early VRO .

It would be wise to run it on a 50:1 two stroke mix until you are satisfied that the VRO system is working correctly. If the VRO has been disabled or removed then run on 50:1 mix.

As a new to you engine with unknown history a new water pump impeller would be wise

The correct spark plugs are Champion QL77JC4 gapped at 0.030" Only Champion plugs are recommended but if you must use NGK use the inductively suppressed BZ7HS-10. Do not use resistor plugs such as BR7HS-10.

More info applicable to an engine which has not been run for a while or with unknown history at http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engi...231-awakening-a-sleeping-outboard-by-boatbuoy
