Went out today on a Jeanneau Prestige 32 in a very short sea as a demo cos the agent had one available and knows I have been waiting for a try.

Now this is my first time takig a boat out and evaluating it, making mental notes and thinking if I really want one. I have taken all sorts of boats out before for brokers when owners not available and not really thought I would like one of these so decided to try it out thoroughly.

Well it went great in the short sea got on the plane no problem and was easily doing 20 knots with twin 44s on shafts. Steering was so different to my single with outdrive and the EDC controls were nice to use also however do 32 flybridge boats usually have the nose in the air a bit. Was good all round viewing from the helm but not when seated inside, something I am not used to having an open sports boat but had a big boat feeling and was easy to control from the flybridge without feeling too exposed, bit wierd as my butt is ususally at water level not high in the sky but something I could quite get used to. Could have gone to Alderney no probs and stayed comfortable and dry without getting tired something not possible today in my boat.

Any way the only thing i need to know at this stage is... is it normal to have the nose facing slightly upwards bearing in mind I completly forgot to use the trim tabs as I dont need them on mine but didnt need them today on the JP32 either just had that point up feeling.

Secondly the agent puts a leaflet under my nose today and says what do you think of that, .....its the Jeanneau Prestige 34 Open.

What where did this come from, when is it being launched, how much, what engines etc etc? Then I turn round to him and sez actually I a mlooking for a hard top boat so I can use it more in rough and nastier weather...turn the page he replies and there it is the hard top version......the answer to my prayers it looks and has the same layout on deck as my Leader 805 saame walkway down the side rounded seating and chez longue etc etc except downstairs it has two cabins and a dining area it is 8.5 feet longer than my current boat and 3 ft wider.

Only question I have is what are outdrives going to be like on a 34 footer, will it be responsive or do you reckon it should have been made with shafts. I am awaiting the launch this Dec or early next year. Oh and it comes with Yanmars too ;-)

My thought are. On a small boat outdrives are fine. Except for the encomberent cost. But as the boat gets bigger, there only a couple of feet under the water so as the sea gets rougher and get ee aww effect ( sorry its the donkey) and stuck out at back of boat. They tend to spend most of time in air, not water. So prepulsion effect is negligable.
To answer your question. Yes. I find that my boat plains at a faster plain with the nose quite high. some one said 30 deg. For best speed Iuse only About, count to five. Minimul trim. At this trim it's fine from the fly brdige, but if rain or sea commng over the top to much. Have to go down stairs. Then have to trim bow down to bottom. So can see above the bow. Hate being down stairs. Ussualy turn the boat into submarine Mode at periscope depth at this junkture? And just fly by wire.

Can't really help with the nose in the air, but did you find that on the 32 having a flybridge was a bit precarious. I sat on one at the boat show and it seemed a bit dodgy for the relative size of the boat?

In the end i brought a Nimbus 320 coupe which has a 230 Yanmar shaft drive. Lovely boat and does 28 knts a full throttle.

Nah felt fine up on flybridge but quite liked driving it from inside comfortable and very very quiet.

Its quite normal to have a planing angle of anything upto 6 or 7 degrees on some boats especially around the hump speed although 4 to 5 degrees is more normal at max speed. Too flat an angle is going to increase the wetted area of the hull decreasing speed accordingly and possibly throwing up a lot of spray. Also designers have to consider that a bows up attitude is much safer in a following sea. IMHO the effect is exacerbated by the helm ergos; if the seat is too low or the screen too high, it makes the bow appear high
You do get used to driving from down below on a flybridge boat although the viz is never as good especially if there's spray around but it's infinitely preferable if you're a big girls blouse like me and dont like getting cold and wet

Sounds interesting to me - I have a single 230 yanmar, hard top and 26ft - looked at the 805 but wanted the hard top. I chose outdrive and have not regretted it. Nimbus is v.nice but a bit pricey for me.
look forward to hearing more about this particular boat - like the jenneau stuff coming out.

True Col if your boat is anything to go by it wont be a problem. Price is less than a Prestige 32 for the 34 I hear. Looking forward to trying one.

I would invite you Col but by your recent track record I dunno....only joking I think it is time to dump you Jonah nickname tho.

..."They spend most of the time in the air...." - Hadyn, where on earth did you get that from? (or is it another bit of blind bias from a shaft fanatic?). I've had outdrives on 23', 29', 31', 34' and 37' boats (last being a Sealine S37). In all that time I cannot remember EVER having the props out of the water, no matter how fast or how rough the conditions.

I have experience of a really nasty Channel crossing, followed by an even worse passage through the Little Russell (damned weather forecasts!) with the S37, and the boat ran straight and true (and on the whole very dry) through it all at 18/19 knots. Not once even then was there ANY evidence of any lack of propulsion due to the props leaving the water..

Further, apart from a broken gearbox cable on one Mercruiser Barvo 2 unit (warranty fix), they were all reliable, and great for vectored thrust in close quarter manoeuvering.

If you'd ever seen it rough. You would not have been doing 18 knotts in a battle ship. Granted it was a 79 P33 and they've improved imeasurably since. But I was trying to make 3 knots at the time. My P35 is famous for it's sea keeping and even thats been down to 8 knots on occasions. Or do you only go out when it's sunny!!

HAH! They think they've been out in rough weather. I have crossed the Atlantic single handed in a Pedalo in a Force 12
and on the way using a bent safety pin with bait made out of a sliver of my own skin, caught a fish that was bigger than my arms outstretched.

Re Bloody Rough Weather!!

"and the boat ran straight and true (and on the whole very dry) through it all at 18/19 knots."

What sort of weather is this? Sounds bloody marvelous weather if can do 18/19 knots in it. Hardly any weather at all!! He should try it with 3ft of green water over the windowscreen. Rant, Rant. Bloody well see him at play time./forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: Bundle Bundle

Pedalo ? Pedalo !!? I used to dream of sailing a Pedalo. I used to sail in a soggy shoe box using my hands to paddle along through force 12 .... well until that's they were bitten off by sharks of course. After that all I could do was hoist my hanky on an old coat hanger and blow into it.........Through all that I still managed to circumnavigate the world .....Twice.

How things have changed .....You try telling the kids of today that and they won't belive you you know.....
