I was thinking of treating myself to a new pair of bins.

I am looking at a pair of secondhand Nikon 7 * 50 Action EX jobs at £80. ("as new"). They are offered by a quality camera shop but too far away to go and try before I buy

Can anyone comment on the optical quality of these items?

My alternative would be new Opticron units at twice the price. Thanks.

Optikron are a well respected make but probably not twice as good as Nikons. Your problem is "do you trust the vendor" and what will yo do if he has misrepresented them?

I think I am happy enough with taking my chance with the condition of the used pair.

The Commodore has a pair of Opticron 8 * 40s though and I would be miffed it the Nikons were not a similar optical quality.

It's not a competition is it? In my view bins for the boat have to be of a quality I can see thro & yet not break my heart (or wallet) when I drop them or they go over the side.

Why not just borrow hers? or get her to spot the bouys for you if she won't let go of them.

In the end I went for the used Nikons, after blagging free delivery.

They are very nice so saved a useful bit. They look on an optical quality par with the missus's 8 by 40 Opticrons.

I often think that and ideal glass for oldies would be a 7 by 40/42 bi or monocular, but that is another issue. I look forward to trying my new bins out at sea this weekend.

Is it my imagination or are there at least half a dozen almost identical pairs of threads running on the forums?

My suggestion (again) Canon 8x25 IS, expensive, but worth every penny. It doesn't take much of a pitch or roll to make binoculars useless, the IS technology sorts it all out.

It is your imagination.

No suggestions required here, it is all very self contained.
