This is Intraventure sitting on the new berth in St Helier marina.

There was a gap in the weather yesterday which we grabbed to make the run from Swanwick to the CI's. We had hoped to meander down over the course of a week, calling in at Alderney, Guernsey etc. on the way but the windy and wet weather blew a hole through that notion.

I had second thoughts about setting off and checked with Swanwick that they hadn't re-allocated our berth. They've been accommodating. My contract ran out at the end of May but they offered not to charge for the days in June that I'd be using - had we stayed more than 4 or 5 days they may have re-visited the offer, but still, they could have asked for a day rate.

The decison to go was helped by dabsolute470 setting off from Brighton ahead of us, he was able to let us know the Channel had a fair swell but no waves as such.

The trip thankfully turned out to be an anti-climax, I managed the 125 miles in pretty much exactly 5 hours, with several opportunities to be running at over 30knts, which shows the sea state wasn't too bad. I had a boost from the tide the whole way which was welcome.

The new berth is one pontoon back from the entrance (B). There is plenty of room to turn so long as they don't raft up the alongside boats in front of us. After the luxury of Swanwick the short, narrow wobbly pontoons mean we have to back in and SWMBO is working out how she'll sort out lines when there is only two of us.

Weather when we arrived was lovely, we had a good meal and States of Jersey laid on some very splendid fireworks to welcome us, so a good start to a new home.

Today is grey miserable and wet - SoF has its attractions after all :-)

Hi Kevin, glad to hear your safely tied up there, yesterday was flat calm in the Solent I'd say the best day to cross.

Tongue in cheek I hope you need my services while the boats over there I could be there in an hour from Southampton airport!

Congratulations on making it across safely Kevin. Looks like you hit the weather window perfectly for your crossing. Enjoy your new playground for the summer, may see you at the start of July when we're due visit St Helier on the MBM cruise.

Have a great time in Jersey

We were there for a year and loved it - mind you we were able to get Flybe flights at 1p from Southampton now and again and never paid more than £30.00:eek:

I imagine it is a bit different now

Our favourite pastime was to cycle up to Corbiere lighthouse and back.

Saturday night suppers were usually lobster or scallops purchased from the fish stall up by the yacht club

Happy days

I'm really jealous :(

We used to spend loads of time in Jersey, spending most of the summers there on and off until a couple of years ago when we sold the boat. We had worked out that we had spent just 3 weeks on it in a year (in CI's ironically) so it made no sense to keep it. Head said sell, heart said not but we did.

It's post like this that really make me miss it though, we do plan on getting another in a couple of years when we have enough time to use it properly (we also live in US so just not here enough).

We are heading to Jersey with my parents in a couple of weeks and I know we will sit looking longingly at the Marina wishing we were tied up there!

We put ourselves on the waiting list for a berth there about 3 years ago and it came up earlier this year, we have asked to go back to the bottom of the list and we will see what our situation is when that comes up! I did suggest to Hubby that we buy a yacht and just leave it there so we had a place to go to. No idea how to drive all those sail things so it wouldn't ever move far!

Also agree with Maybh1, prices ain't what they used to be!

Anyway, congrats with your move - enjoy it! :)

too true - flights are now £50 to £80 each one way, plan is to spend more time on the boat each trip, cos it's too much to fly back and forward every weekend.

However the marina is cheaper than Swanwick as is the fuel, those two combined would fund a couple of trips a month.

That should work out as we're planning on being here the first few weeks of July - do you recall when you'll be in St Helier?

Just dug out the itinerary and it looks like we're due in St Helier (if all goes to plan?) from Mon 26th to Thurs 28th June. If I dont see you then then may see you sometime over the summer as have we have an office 5 mins walk from the marina and I'm normally in Jersey for a few days every couple of weeks.

Enjoy it and keep those photos coming.

Sounds like we will definitely be able to meet up, especially if you stay over and can be tempted into a beer and curry. I'll PM contact details.

Welcome

Welcome to Jersey, sure you will love it as a base in the middle of the CI with a port to visit in every direction.

Flights, Blue Islands are doing some great offers from Southampton, free baggage, flexible with free changes and a comfortable lounge with refreshments.

As for the wobbly pontoons, I have seen a few people slip in on occasion when I worked as an attendant many years ago.

I would recommend you look at the 4ft 'rowlock' mounted onto the pontoon for hanging your spring lines on for ease of retrieval. Also, have a wonder around the marina and at La Collette and see how some of the local boats have a lazy line / bungee running between their mooring lines, makes it simple once you have the first line to get all the others onboard.

If you have enough space between you and the boat next to you, you could always enquire about a more substantial finger pontoon being fitted.

I would be prepared that boats will be rafted 2 possibly 3 deep opposite you in July and August. Also, don't be surprised if you get back to Jersey before the marina has opened to find boats 6 or more deep on the waiting pontoon outside.

Thanks for the useful info :)

I've done as you suggest and started putting in fixed lines with short chains at the right lengths for each cleat.

Funnily enough DWMBO (daughter who must...) flew back to City with Blue Island yesterday and was impressed.

A Belgian 50ft steel boat has apparently taken the berth the other side of the pontoon from us. If anything was going to act as a solid windbreak and stabilise the finger pontoon that will.

Had to double up lines last night/today, it is blowing hard here.

The good news is dabsolute470 put us on to a good Indian, which for research reasons we tried last night, and it is Purbani level, even does a Chilli Garlic Chicken with industrial quantities of all 3 ingredients.

We also checked out the Michelin starred place, the influence of DWMBO again. Not sure I didn't prefer the Indian :)

kcrane,
Kevin, when you get to St Aubins if you see Hermees opposit the Tenby Bars,

Hi Rich

Is St Aubins where the Boathouse is? Assuming weather improves we'll take maybh1 advice and cycle to the lighthouse, which means passing through I think? Which garage?

BTW elegant looking boat - what is it?

Yes it is, but make your way to the south arm & you will find the Old Court House inn & Royal channel island yacht club.

my boat is a 1963 Fox's Revalry the last of a long line.

Which garage?
The only petrol staion in St Aubin,(est: 1920) R.I.P 2012 the way things are going,
