Ok - so many will say bin them, but I have a pair as a back-up. One battery pack is now beyond recovery so I looked to fabricate a new pack from tagged AA batteries but at just under £5 per cell this was not an option. The bin came to mind again!!
The installed pack is a single Toshiba T-500AA cell taped on top of and connected to a Toshiba 8 cell 8T-500-W1E pack.
Fortunately these battery cases are easy to open and gain access to the contents.
To resolve this challenge I obtained two 4-cell PCB mounting AAA battery boxes for 4 cells and a single cell AAA box Maplin Parts CL15R and JY45Y. Using double sided foam tape to stick the 4-cell boxes back to back and the single cell box to the top of one per the layout of the origional pack.
Wiring up to ensure power folws through for all cells to be in a serial format and connect in per the AA pack.
The boxes were £0.79 each and I found 6-packs of 1300mAh AAA NiMH batteries on ebay for £4.49 each thus both batteries have been renewed with 2.5 times the capacity and no memory effect problems of the as fitted ones for under £20!! (And easy future replacement.)
This will also work for similar battery packs but care is needed to ensure correct connections and with not overtightening screws which are secured in the plastic body of the case.
