New batteries

Get out of bed the wrong side this morning Dennis? If some forumites have more money than sense, then good luck to them. I'm not aware of any that have won the lottery or have acquired their wealth without earning it.

And I like to hear different ideas, even if they're not what the OP asked for. It would be rather boring if the only response to this thread was replace like for like.

BTW, how are your 7 boats and have you bought your place in Spain yet :)?

And how would you know how they earned their money............ As you said you are not aware

As for the other pop I am dammed sure I have earned it......... How about you

Hi Murv

Something else to consider is cable run. Certainly on my Sedan 36, big fat cables ran from the batt box....past the engines to the isolators at the lower helm then back to the engines! That’s probably 10 metres of cable length.

I put solenoid isolators with manual over rides right by the battery box with new cables from there to the starter motors. Batt to starter maybe 1.5m now. Both span over much better after that. Plus the original cables were probably 30 years old. I wired the solenoid wires into the exsisting isolator switches at the lower helm so it all worked as before.

Mine from new also had a diode (I think that’s what it’s called) so when the starboard is started, it charges all 4 batteries. I was checking things with a volt meter and couldn’t figure out what the hell was going on....until I followed the cables to a strange looking box :)

As our boats were made around the same time....you probably do too :D

Because over the years I've met many forumites and have even been invited onboard a few of their boats.

Yep, I've earned my money, started work the week after I left school at 16 and grafted ever since (my boss might dispute the last bit)!

Anyhow, if you want more "down to earth" advice, there's always the PBO section of this forum.

Give BatteryMegastore a call. They will have great value solutions for you.

But might not deliver them :(

I ordered 4 x Trojan T105 batteries in April 2015. On Thursday I was told they were with the transport company and would be delivered the following day. I waited in all day and enquired as to their whereabouts early afternoon. i was again assured they would be delivered before the end of the day. i called again at about 5pm, to get an ansaphone. At 6.15pm I had managed to find the transport company and was told that "You wont be getting any batteries today or tomorrow, because we havent been asked to deliver any to you!".

This actually wasted a whole weekend as I had set it aside for receiving the batteries on the Friday and fitting them on the Saturday, rather than going boating.

On the Monday, having been lied to, for whatever reason, I asked for my money back, got it very quickly, and bought a month later from Tayna. Ordered at about 3pm, delivered to an out of the way boatyard the following morning.

Battery Megastore may be OK if you are not to bothered when your batteries are delivered, or even if your batteries are delivered. I can accept mistakes and errors, but the blatant lies were unbelievable.

Many thanks all, fantastic stuff, now to actually get on with it!

Farsco, thank you for your post, seems obvious now that that is the cable run, I have the same system of isolators about as far from the batteries as it's possible to get! Great idea with the relay's, I may well investigate that in the future although, of course, it is something else to go wrong!
Very good to know about the charge box, there is definitely a switch for split charging so I suspect my setup is exactly the same. My "problem" is that the cabling is very neat and carefully hidden away so will require a bit of investigation to find out what goes where.

suspect the infra red radiation from that boat could be seen from space !

Sir, whatever do you mean? Just a couple of 60" plasma screens, consoles and the hot tub, I doubt we'll pulling more than a few hundred amps at any one time. Hardly a big ask of a couple of clapped out lorry batteries I wouldn't have thought?

Offended, of Tunbridge Wells,

I have only ever received top service from B/Megastore, and know others the same. The moved premises a while a go, could your experience have been during that time?

No idea... it was April 2015.. but it doesn’t matter to me. As I said, I can live with mistakes and errors, but the obvious lies which screwed up my weekend, are unforgivable. I agree that any company with their volume of business will have thousands, even millions, of happy customers - but if they deal with things that go wrong like they did with me, they will also have lots of disappointed ex customers, which probably doesn’t matter to them.

I seem to recall the battery megastore criticism at an earlier time.
In my case battery megastore phoned the day after my order to apologize as they had run out of stock and offered my money refunded (I made the purchase via ebay) . I wanted the batteries so agreed a delivery the next day, which was honoured - it was a Thursday .
Since there was no particular rush and I wanted the batteries for the weekend that was okay with me. It was nice of them to phone and explain the situation.

Sometimes low cost or free delivery can be worth the wait to save a few pounds.
