I have to install new baggywrinkles and everyone I've asked for advice obviously has no idea (I suspect it is a specialized job carried out by a yacht rigger)

First of all shape. Fortunately I have one to use as a pattern.

Do they use sheep or cow hide? (I have looked at Kangaroo hide (Too thin -1mm but strong) and Cow hide -leather)

I planned to use
"strong waterproof waxed polyester thread cord spool leather work"
15 metres strong waterproof waxed polyester thread cord spool leather work beads | eBay

Last night I ordered some cow hide just as a sample.

I'd appreciate your advice :D

Another part of my absent education.

I thought the things you have in your photos are 'anti chafe spreader covers'. Which sometimes come as a plastic moulding, 2 pieces.

I similarly thought baggy wrinkles were sort of wooly, furry things looking very 17th - 19th century.

I have used any old leather, off cuts from the upholstery for our saloon. I have punched holes along the edges and used leather lacing. I suspect there may be better synthetic materials than leather

That's why I couldn't find any sort of wooly, furry things:rolleyes:

But now I can find anti chafe spreader covers
  • Spreader caps
  • spreader boots
  • spread pole Anti-Chafe
Geez! It isn't any wonder people gave me a dumb bloody look when I asked them where I could buy "baggywrinkles"

Anyhow since you obviously know nothing about baggywrinkles I think I'll have a close look at cow hide when I get it in the mail. (But maybe I need to look at softer sheep hide?)

Also known as spreader boots. Why not use the white rubbery ones? I just did, if you warm them with a hot air gun they fit beautifully and if you finish them with white self amalgamating tape they will last for years. Of course if you want to do it because you like that sort of project, I fully understand, that's a different matter altogether.

Good luck.

I think baggywrinkle is self made by knotting / splicing short lengths of old rope around a long length of rope and then wrapping this spirally around the rigging shroud where it contacts the sail. May be wrong though!?

Neaves says "come as a plastic moulding, 2 pieces."
So they just clip together around the spreader/rigging? That would save a lot of messing around.

$150 for a pair of leather boots?
