Someone in the US sent me these pix from last week. It is hull #1 of the new Azimut 116, called "TV". It's the boat that was reviewed by most of the mags late last summer including (I think) the custom yachting section of MBY last year, and it was the boat displayed in Monaco show last september

The original owners just sold her and the story is the new owner insisted his new crew get her to a certain place by a certain date so the new crew took her out of an unfamiliar marina (Port Everglades. Florida) at night and hit the rocks.

Methinks you're some kind of a Jonah the way you keep coming up with these wrecked boats. Crew must have been well drunk 'coz the fairway looks to be pretty wide and with plenty of buoyage. Does'nt look like mechanical failure as anchor does'nt seem to be deployed?

Canadian flagged

Yup, when she was launched last summer she was reported to have been bought/commissioned by 4 couples from mexico, who worked in the TV industry, and she was Canadian flagged. It says Halifax Nova Scotia on the transom. I have no idea why a super yacht would be canadian flagged. She has been listed on brokerage for the last month or two and was sold a few weeks ago, and seems to have remained Canadian flagged.

Anyone here sailed Ft Lauderdale area, specifically Port Everglades marina? I just looked at a chart and it seems pretty easy, so not sure why this happened. I'm told she was en route to Dom Rep at time of smash, so full of fuel, hence the oil slick boom thing

Yup sorry about all the smashed up photos lately. Will try to find a few pics of non crashed boats :)

Re: Canadian flagged

It looks like the entrance to Ft Laugherdale which is a very easy entrance use. There must be more to the story cos doing that would be difficult!

Re: Recovery time

No i meant how would they recover it,
I would presume its been holed, and if they just began to tow, it would soon sink!

So are you saying they would do a quick fix under water, b/4 towing to the nearest lifting place?

Re: Canadian flagged

The problem is how you tow her off 'coz there's no tide to lift her off. You could get a big f**k off tug but where would you attach the lines and even if the attachment points held you'd do a load of damage dragging her off. You could put flotation bags under her and lift her to reduce the draft but she looks too well grounded for that.
I suppose one way would be to locate a bloody great mobile crane ( say, 250t capacity) on the beach behind the breakwater, lift the stern and rotate her gently until she floated at the stern. You'd probably need a small tug to hold her in that position. Then lift her gently at the bow and, with the help of the tug, pull her away from the breakwater. You'd have to have pumps and flotation bags in case she started taking on water
You could do the same with a crane mounted on a floating barge but they're quite rare and probably more expensive to hire

Re: Recovery time

I'd have thought either a temporary repair and then tow, or possibly (if not too badly holed), massive pump(s) on board to keep the water level down whilst towing. However, I suspect there's a significant danger that getting her off the rocks may cause even more damage if not handled with considerable care and circumspection, so there may be a certain amount of head-scratching going on before anyone does anything much.....

extent of damage

I think it's a barge crane job mike. The report I got from very knowledgeable correspondent in US said "major hull damage, more than 12 holes in the hull, including an 8 foot gash near the bow and even worse, the port strut and prop came through the hull and flooded the engine room!"

So, oldgit, if it had Volvo IPS the bronze bit would have snapped off and, much less damage :)
