New asbestos sealing strip in \'Bully\' charcoal heater...

Well I just lifted the cover on the Bully charcoal heater on my 'new' old boat, and clouds of fibres flew everywhere from the asbestos cord strip used as a sealing mechanism round the top - which is looking generally knackered with various bits missing or abraded. I tried not to breathe in for a while as the dust settled...

So is there a safer material I can substitute for asbestos cord as the seal clearly needs replacing? Or where do I get another bit of the old stuff if not?

Thanks!

I don't think you will be able to get asbestos any more, due to Health & Safety issues. You will get the modern white heat-resisting "rope" for flue seals from a distributor of woodburning stoves in your area.

If you can't find anywhere closer, give Uxbridge Boat Centre a call on 01895 252019. They'll post some out to you. Fibreglass rope is used nowadays and you need to get the right size. You should check the other seals in case you need different sizes.
