Just a heads-up. There’s a fresh Application to build a ghastly, massive, 3-screw hydro scheme on the lovely main weir at Goring (pics attached).
To have your say on this, go to www.southoxon.gov.uk then go to Planning and look-up P15-S2946-FUL to log your opinions. Closing date for responses is 26th October so please don’t delay! Hydro photomontage, downstream view PL2-008.jpgHydro photomontage, upstream view PL2-010.jpg

WHY??
The only people who could possibly be offended are any occupants of the ex-lock keepers cottage, folks walking on the bridge and boaters going up or down.

Oh - and possibly your goodself.....

The installations at Romney and Osney can hardly be seen and the latter has a most pleasant rustic pitched rook.
Methinks it's the artist's impression that's ghastly - as do most architectural drawings.

For what its worth a small hydro scheme with an Archimedes Screw has been in operation at the Mill at East Hanney in Oxfordshire for many years.

It is not an eyesore and produces usefull power from a small stream.

Goring Weir-why not?

Unless its nimbyism......................................

Have seen this elsewhere and yes the artists impression is ugly, however if a suitable in keeping structure is put over it I don't see an objection.

As Byron says, I'm sure it will blend in after a few years. What's not to like - free power generation. (initial construction cost excepted)

So the complainee is obviously not going to worry if an application for a nice oil/gas/coal fired station or the "N" word is whispered to keep his lights on and his toes warm this winter.
About 50 acres should do nicely, plus a couple of access roads and maybe a rail link.

Aha just dawned on me.....the chap obviously generates his own power.
Be interesting to discuss the various benefits of biomass or solar as opposed to wind ? :)

better looking than those awful windmills

Presume that you are surrounded by them from your comments.:)
On a clear day (no man made pollution created by London and just possibly by its suburbs to the west ) two windmills located in the prison on the Isle of Sheppey can be seen turning gracefully in the wind. Not far away,in the background are the windmills in the Thames Estuary. They have just added a further row.
Very recently, the sound of explosions, not far from OG palatial mansions, can be heard as they demolish the two coal fired power stations at Kingsnorth and Grain, well remember waking up to spots of soot on the clothes hanging overnight of our washing line.
Do you a deal, let you have some of my windmill to power your lights perhaps you might like to take a power station or two nearbye to power mine ? :)

Whenever you see objections to stuff like this I often wonder what the locals must have thought of the original weir and lock development. Its all nicely weathered in now but when new the fresh concrete structures must have looked awful compared to any previous wooden structures and fast flowing water and shallows. :)

Very well put Chris.

Windy-mills only work when there's wind
Water-mills work when there's water 24/7 and there's always some of that on t' thames - so a step in the right direction.

Is the OP the owner of the pub / restaurant - or perhaps a liveaboard......
