New alternator

Hi. I just bought a new lucas A127 from the motor factors to replace the burnt out one on my boat. The old connections are studs ,B- B+ and it does away with the spade connection. The guy in the shop says it won't work unless the spade connection is used. I'm confused now as the old one worked for years without the spades.
Any ideas before I fit it tomorrow?

The old stud connection and not the spade works.
