Jeanneau 37.1 = 84,000 just add water
Dufour 36 = 91,000
Bavaria 37 = 68,000

Well, jeaneau say - Bav is a skoda, 2nd hand value is poo.
Dufour say the others are lesser quality
Bavaria says oh we can take off 3%
I'm sure others have done the sums and evaluation - I guess sunsail did their homework before they ordered 40 boats!

Any views?

Congratulations to YM!

On their very candid and insightful review of Bavaria production technology in this month's issue. It should help answer your question.

After the blandness of the boat tests, it was a masterstroke to investigate production methods. I hope we see more of this type of review.
 
Bavaria is better quality

I looked at all the mas productions and the joinery, deck gear, etc is all better on the Bavarias.

Might be worth looking at a 3 year old 35,36 etc as you might find for £50K+ you can get a lot of extra kit (radar, etc) thrown in.

Yes couldnt agree more , all the stuff on the deck on the Bavaria is of higher quality
than on some of those very exclusive (costing 3 times the price ) boats . You get a
set of sails in the price with the Bavaria as well.but then if you wish to spend 70 thou
on getting the woodwork inside handmade good luck-yes i HAVE looked in the other
yards and seen what you are paying for.

That said, if I had 150K+, Id go for a Najad 373.

My critisism of the Bavaria/Jeaneau/Beneteau (and I own a Bavaria) is that they are hard work in heavy seas. A crew of 4 blokes and you are ok but I want something heavier and skeg hung to smash my way across the channel.

But, then again, I was out 2 weeks ago in 30 degrees off the isle of wight with 6 of us and at the end of the evening we all retired to our own cabins with noone stuffed into the saloon. You couldnt do that on a Najad 373.

I know.....I'll get a 50 foot Najad!!
 
Is it a fair comparison Ian ? Are all 3 boats spec'd up with the same gear e.g furling headsails , anchor hardware , instrument packages etc. How about commissioning charges ?
When I looked at these 3 boats , the Jeanneau had the best standard spec.
 
Bavaria are selling so many boats at the moment , you might have a bit of a problem getting a price reduction . I got the impression when I looked at the Jeanneau that they might be open to a little haggling.
 
Cost in...

Finishing - most modern mass production cruisers come with 'careless' finishing like unsealed end grain, one coat of varnish, rough edges on toe rails etc, one thin coat of cheap antifoulng. Cost in finishing the boat yourself, to an acceptable standard.

Upgrades - is what comes as standard good enough. How much more will you need to spend to beef up equipment?

Extra equipment - not just electronic gizmo's but stuff like longer warps, extra fenders, storm sails, a cruising chute, self tailing winches.

Finally, depreciation. "Cheap' boats depreciate faster.

Then, arrange to sail the boats on your shortlist upwind in a blow. Then try to sleep in the aft cabin when there's a bit of a popple. Then order a Rustler 36!

Tooo rich for my blood and it would be wasted anchored off the beach, filled with children (and therefore sand at weekends) beautiful ship though. A 1997 model advertised at 110,000!
 
As a finance geek, discounts might vary depending on who is organising financing, the sellers get big (very big) commisions on financing contracts which sometimes get distributed in part to buyers. One option I have heard about is buying on finance and repaying early (watch out for the early repayment cost) good hunting.

The Rustler is a wonderful boat - just about the only boat out there that I would consider for my next boat.

Don't think it would suit Ian though - probably no more room than Taiyo. And Mrs G insists on Twin Aft Cabins
 
Don\'t stint yourself *PC warning*

If you're spending money you'll never have then don't hold back. I would like a varnished brigantine crewed by a willing squad of lithe bronzed damsels. Or perhaps a Wally with electronic everything and original Picassos on the bulkheads. A Gaugin or two would be nice as well.
