New 34\' wooden mast
My old single spreader 34' Oregon mast has done 50 years and is starting to look like it might kiss the deck in a really good blow. This despite love, regular tuning, and varnish.
We are planning to go offshore where spare spruce is rare.
A new mast is in order. I am planning an 8 part box section Sika Spruce twin spreader masthead rig with removable inner forestay and removable running intermediates. A Furuno 16mile radar at the junction, (hounds) of the second spreaders and the inner forestay etc.
Tapered blocks on the inside of the hounds, head, foot and gooseneck. Epoxy glue and loving layers of varnish to finish.
Though I have extensively restored a 30' 4 piece box section mast before it was a small fractional rig and I would love some advice. Please do not try to convince me of the need to paint this creation as I am a declared varniphile and will not be converted. Gravity being a force to be reckoned with the receiving end of a rotten painted wooden mast is unpleasant, even if it is looking very sturdy under its 2 pack paint.
Thanks for your time
