Never throw overboard the only person who knows how to navigate

ah, ok

Which ever provider (ISP) you are on, has been blocked because people from same ISP have been spamming

Ah..... A bit OTT though?

It's NTL, so there are a few using it! S'pose they must have had more than enough hassle to resort to blocking NTL completely.

I haven't really looked much at the forum to see who's running it, but I suspect sometimes moderators with little time on their hands just block bar ISP's who are a problem and don't respond to requests to get spammers taken off line

I'm increasingly getting blocked from sites with the same page. My ISP is demon.
Something says that these new ISP detecting algorithms are too much of the sledgehammer to crack a nut. Bound to be a spammer somewhere on every ISP.

actually, they often don't even spam from their own machines and ISP's, they simply take over computers, sometimes in the millions, then spam from these netbots. The reason people block ISP's is when the ISP does not help in closing down the spammers

I have been getting this for a while when trying to reach the trailersailor forum. I am a registered user there, but they won't even let me so far as to type my info in. Oh, and yes I have filled in the form but never got any reply...

I think it is a bit of a "I don't want you as a customer as you live in the wrong neighbourhood"-attitude. They will eventually harm themselves as people won't change their ISPs for this but just move to another forum.

That's not it at all. The people who own the sailboatowners.com sites are good friends of mine...I've known them and hosted a forum on their sites for nearly 10 years. They've been hit HARD by spammers--most of which originates from sites outside the US--in the last year or two. And because spammers addresses are so often spoofed, their system sometimes automatically "barracades" some ISPs...my own (sbc.yahoo) has even been blocked a couple of times. If you email to information@sailboatowners.com telling 'em you'd like to log on but can't and what's happening, they'll be glad to fix the problem. Meanwhile, I'll forward this thread to 'em.

It's a sad world that requires so much protection against miscreants that it also keeps out those who mean no harm.

And, again...sorry for all the problems I caused just because I thought that tossing the only person overboard who knew how to run the vessel was one that y'all would find amusing. Next time (if there IS a next time), I'll just copy/paste the story instead of providing a link.

Sorry, but yes thas is exactly it. Stopping perfectly legitimite users who happen to be "mainly from outside the US" is exactly the wrong way to fight the problem. It is accepting far too much collateral damage to obtain the goal. Even if it does lead to fewer spam, you have made life more difficult for perfectly innocent people.
The right way would be to give known and trusted users moderator privileges and pull the spam manually.

I do myself moderate a, admittedly much smaller, forum and it really is not that hard. There are lot of people who are here (for example) almost all the time anyway. The same applies for trailersailor.

Unfortunately this is how society is headed these days - it is exactly the same thing as all those harassments in the name of fighting terrorism.

Giving up freedom to fight it's misuse is losing the war!

(So now I guess I will get a post pulled for the first time, but I'll risk it!)
