I understand that you only need one copy of a chart to be able to display it on both screens of two networked Axioms. Does anybody happen to know whether it is also possible to update the software of one, using the card slot of the other?

Yes, that is what I have been able to do. One of the Axioms acts as a master and will update all Raymarine instruments that are networked to it.
