Both the above tick many of the boxes for my next boat but I have no experience of either. Having watched the market over the last while. I notice that Neptunians would seem to command a considerable premium over the Barbary..So I thought I would tap into the knowledgeable on the forum and ask for unbiased :-) opinions of them both

Surprised you have not had any first hand comment as there are people on here who own theses boats, but maybe they are on holiday enjoying them!

Anyway you are unlikely to get an unbiased comparison that way as owners love their boats (otherwise why would they own them) and doubt any has owned both. No doubt they will be able to tell why they bought one rather than the other, or indeed other alternatives such as the Halberdier, but you will be doing this exercise yourself from your perspective.

The difference in values reflects in part demand. The Barbary crams a lot into a short boat, is more motor than sail and does not (IMHO) have the style and elegance of the Neptunian. I would prefer a Halberdier if I wanted that sort of boat, but might also be tempted by an HR Rasmus.

So with the bigger Atlantic suggested plenty in theory to choose from, assuming you can find a decent one at the right price.

I'd be interested to hear opinions on them as well, both are on my list for a next boat. I cant however agree with Tranona on the elegance of the Neptunian. To my eye he'd be right if it wasn't for the erm "striking" sheer of the front dog house windows. Spoil the whole boat for me but I keep it on my shortlist just in case I can ever overcome that feeling or I find one in top notch condition at the right price. The Barabary has the nicer outline and shape imho.

Btw also on my personal list are a benneteau evasion 32 and right at the top a marcon claymore 30.

EDIT: I wonder if would be possible to remodel the whole front of the Neptunian dog house?

I have owned a Barbary Ketch for 17 years now , pleased with it , offers good weather protection feels safe and in my opinion sails much better than you may think .

Can't claim to be unbiased as we have had our Neptunian ketch for 5 years now. We sailed from Preston to Marseilles via the canals then over to Sardinia. We are now near Valencia.
She is solid, and sails well, we are now engaged in improving her performance in lighter winds, via an inner jib and mizzen stay sail.

I will be glad to provide pictures and some comprehensive files on our boat if interested parties want to pm me.

Difficult to compare unless you have sailed both: I have had a Barbary ketch for 26 years, sails well in a decent breeze on a reach, not that close winded but we often see folk with boats that should be far better under sail motoring to windward, solid and sturdy and look after you, happy with mine

Had the same problem 13 years ago. Decided that ketch rigs take up too much space on sub 40ft.

Bought my Nab35/Rasmus35 sloop and am as happy as the proverbial pig!
