Some years ago we met a fellow HR in Salcombe who had anchored off one of the beaches. The swivel failed and his anchor was apparently lost, but as it happened, a child, possibly daughter or granddaughter, I don’t remember which, had been playing with the GPS and so their exact position had been recorded and the anchor was recovered a day or two later.

My bow roller doesn't have a roller just a smooth stainless steel curve. To try to protect the galvanising on the anchor chain I fabricated an HDPE 'liner' that is moulded into the channel of the bow roller.
Three weeks ago when weighing anchor in Newtown (IOW) the chain caught a corner of the liner and it swiftly disappeared over the side.
Last week we were in Newtown again and went for a walk along the shore outside the harbour. About half a mile along the beach there was my 'liner' sitting at the high water mark. Refitted wth a few blobs of OB1 and hopefully it will stay attached this time.

After riding out the outer edges of a hurricane ( so max 75mph) on an oversized cqr
in PR years ago , when it came to retrieve it, up it came along with the brand new Fortress put out as a second anchor by a motor boat twat ..
He didn’t get that one back.

Fellow dinghy sailing course student on loch Tay lost wallet from hip pocket sitting out, probably in middle of the loch but anywhere over about half its length.
Found on downwind beach the next day. Not quite astonishing, but I wouldn't have bet on it, especially as he said he had some coins in the wallet

My neighbour hasn’t recovered the wallet/card case that fell out of his pocket when dinghy sailing in the Colne ten years ago. He is the most obsessively cautious person I know but lives from one cock-up to the next, which shows that the gods have ways of punishing timidity.

Many years ago, out with a charter angling party. Time to make the tea, so emptied the old tea bags from the previous brew over the side (different times).

Because I'm that sort of uncle I bought my nephew one of those magnets a few years ago, along with a decent length of rope. I must ask my sister if she's managed to get it back off the radiator yet...

I know it is possible to 'neutralise' an ordinary horseshoe magnet with an iron bar but what do people do to ensure the safety of these new neodymium ones that can exceed a man's strength?

You need to slide the magnet to the edge of the metal to remove it
The strength is measured in tons !
Magnet fishing is actually a popular sport.....go to a canal or river and start trolling....as well as scrap bicycles and supermarket trolleys, you might find historical items

Interesting thing on that - German ordnance is generally okay, because it either worked as designed or was sabotaged deliberately by slave labour and a complete dud. Allied ordnance, on the other hand, was produced in enormous quantities by the lowest bidders and actually going "bang" on demand was very much viewed as a stretch target. Apparently if you drop enough tonnage then enough of it will go "bang" eventually...
This means magnetic fishing is very much safer in places bombed by the Nazis than it is in places where the Allies might have chucked it away to become somebody else's problem. Right next to an air base is probably a bad choice, tbh...
