So, in relation to this thread:
http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?350314-Boom-problem!

I now have the "pin" which is a hollow aluminium tube. I drilled out the broken rivet however the entire end cap crumbled away in the process, so I can't just chuck a new rivet in there. Looks like I need to tap a new thread in there and use a bolt. Unfortunately, I don't have any tapping tools. I don't suppose there's anyone around the Hamble/Solent area that could either lend me a tapping tool or tap the pin for me?

What size? I bought a pair of M6 taps the other day to bolt a cleat to my mast; if that would do you're welcome to come and borrow them.

Couple of quid each from eBay, so if you're not in a rush you could always enhance your own toolbox slightly.

If that is the shaft the sheaves rotate on I am very surprised that it is made of aluminium, as the one in my Sparcraft boom is stainless steel. I don't know the make of your boom, but if it was mine I would investigate to see whether to replace it with a stainless shaft. The shaft in my boom is retained by having one end splined so that it grips in the boom without rotation.

P.S. If you are happy with the aluminium tube, you could just drill the hole all the way through it to 6mm and get a 316 stainless bolt to pass right through with washers each end and a nylock nut.

A good point. The equivalent axle for my masthead sheaves was a bit knackered, and I replaced it with a length of stainless bar slightly longer than the fitting, with a hole drilled through each end to take a split pin and washer. The same could be done here.

KISS principal. That would make a lot of sense to me. As long as the fastener isn't holding something structural together at the same time. If so then Norman_E has the answer.

So, in the end a very kind gentleman who has his boat at Universal stopped by last week and asked if I'd got this sorted. He then offered to take the bit away and fix it for me. Not only did the repaired spindle appear in my cockpit the following day but a second, new spindle had also been fabricated.
Unfortunately, I don't have any contact details, but I know he reads the forum, so...
Peter, many thanks for your help, the bits look great. Please do let me know how I can reimburse you/ return the favour.
