Any forumites in Ibiza have a berth free for say a week around 17th August? Happy to swap my berth in Sant Carles De La Rapita! Just thought I'd ask.

About 3 boats in our marina wanted to travel over around that time, I expect it's very, very busy! I hope to hop over from Denia - Any useful guidance/advice most welcome! I may not go if too dificult. Not much luck from reader-to-reader! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Forget trying to get into a marina in Ibiza during August and I can't imagine why anyone would want to swap a berth in S Carles for a berth in Ibiza during August (no offence!). 15m berths in the 2 poshest Ibiza Town marinas were going for €300-400 a night last year in August, if you could get one. We paid €180 per night 5 years ago. Santa Eulalia is slightly cheaper further up the coast but the marina in Formentera is as expensive as Ibiza Town. Basically there are far too many visiting boats chasing far too few visitor berths. You can forget about booking ahead because there is no booking system. If you phone to book a berth, they will tell you to phone again at 09.00 on the day you want to visit. When you phone at 09.00, they will tell you to phone at 17.00 and when you phone at 17.00, they'll tell you there are no berths. Thats the booking system, at least is was 5 yrs ago
When we last cruised Ibiza, we did see some bouys in a bay on the west coast of Ibiza (it might be Cala Salada but don't quote me, it's there or slightly north of there) and I think there might be some bouys off S Antonio which is not a place you want to visit unless you're a drug addled teenager
As for anchoring, well, take your pick as there are loads of anchorages. Firstly do NOT anchor inside the new breakwater at Ibiza Town. It's prohibited and somebody got heavily fined recently for doing it (like thousands of Euros). The north of the island is more remote and slightly less crowded but the anchorages are open to the north and the mistral wind. Portixol and S Miguel are gorgeous. The south of the island seemed to us to be more protected but beware Salinas which has several noisy clubs on the beach which go on all night. Note that all anchorages get the onshore afternoon seabreeze but in the evening, the opposite happens and the wind comes whistling back off the land so plan for swinging about. Formentera is a must to visit and Espalmador is a classic Med anchorage but get there early as it fills quickly. There is a long beach on the east side of Formentera, south of Espalmador which is good to anchor off although the passing ferries cause a swell
We were berthed in Denia for the 2004 season and made the trip across to Ibiza several times. It's about 3 hours at 20knots. It's best done in either direction in the early morning to avoid the afternoon seabreeze which can set up quite a nasty sea off Denia. I don't know why but it always seemed to be windier in Denia than Ibiza
I hope I haven't put you off visiting Ibiza. It is a wonderful cruising area which is why, of course, everyone goes there. August is not the best time to visit but get a spell of settled weather and you can anchor for a few nights. Having said all that, we're planning a few days there ourselves in w/c 20th July

Hi again John,
A familiar thread ......
Here's my thoughts ....
Just returned from Mallorca and was speaking to a couple who have just moved over from Ibiza after drifting around regularly with their S38.
We asked them about berthing in Ibiza after the 'rumours' and they replied with a common repeat thread which was that there are plenty of berths around but you do need to turn up with your boat - then your a real customer !
Booking in advance - useless !
Over 12m can be difficult / expensive !
Never been refused a berth !
Longer term rental berths available if you ask the right person nicely !
We have concluded that, with a large boat - and certainly a cat - physical space is the problem but with smaller boats then they will fit you in.
The 'extreme shortage' of berths for modest boats is certainly not the situation we have experienced in the last 12 months.
Most Balaeriac Marinas were typically built 15 years plus ago for mainly the 6m to 12m market. As the boats have got bigger there is a pinch point for the larger boats who need very big wallets - its simply supply and demand.
i.e. Monaco F1 Grand Prix week - quoting and big boats paying e50,000 per night in the Marina last year. Yes I know its France but its a typical supply / demand market force.

The yacht next to us has just returned from a two week Ibiza trip. Ibiza no issues anywhere he went. Formentera is perhaps different though as its a very small marina and expensive (70e a night) last week for 11m. He did pre-book Formentera but regretted as the ferry wash is uncomfortable - he recommends to go on anchor there !

Before its said your planned 3 boat 'August' trip will be busier but it wouldnt put me off.

I'd set off with a basic plan and think you'll be pleasantly suprised. Remember though that desperation for a berth usually results in 'extra special rates' !

Happy boating
Richard.

PS remember to forget to wear your speedo's on Formentera !

Ok,

From a past life I remember the Ibiza Poker Run...every night. Basically those without berths all hang around in the calas enjoying themselves until the first one lifts his hook to head back and get a berth, Then all the others realise it is time to go and hurridly pack up and set off. They then basically race each other back to get one of the few Berths. The locals with berths then stay out later and laugh.

On one day in August this started at 4pm! It wasted most of the day just to get a berth...

But I never saw anyone without an overnight anchorage or berth so I would go and sort out when you arrive!

Have a great time

Are there any moorings to pick up, in San Antonio? Or can we still anchor there without problems? Also can you get a berth there at the new area/marina, for a 57' boat, or even at the yacht club? thanks for any help.
