Twice as many as there were when there were only half as many as there are now.

Sorry, couldn't resist.....Tony C.

A second go:

If so, pray tell.
Thx in advance.

Re: Always read your message before posting!

In commision or sitting in yards ne'er to see water again.

Porduction or converted trawlers / ships lifeboats / barges?

Don't know the answer to these two either

hope this helps

Re: Always read your message before posting!

Actually likely to be sailed (or at least their owners think so!). Doesn't matter if we're taking about converted MFVs, MTBS, ASRL's etc.

Re: Always read your message before posting!

Since almost every vessel will be underwritten 'eventually' by Lloyds, maybe they might have a figure. Whether or not they would divulge it is another matter I suppose.

Occasionally the yachting press appear to make assumptions / estimates on numbers of leisure craft, based upon what ?

Re: Always read your message before posting!

ah ... wud this include vessels able to sail past St C's on a southerly course toward cherbourg? ooops ... must read the question ... vessels over 15m ...

Why do you want/need to know ?

I would guess that most have registration but don't suppose the powers that be would divulge.

a pragmatist is an optimist with a boat in the UK - but serious about not being in the UK !

It looks like the answer to your question is "No"!
You may be able to get a slightly more helpful (but less amusing!) answer from Mike OFCOM Martin.

Got this from the BMIF site.

How many leisure boats are owned in the UK?
British Marine Federation has consulted on this issue with marine insurers, magazine publishers and the RYA. The consensus is that approximately 451,000 boats are kept in the UK and approximately 90,000 UK-owned boats are kept abroad. The number of foreign owned boats kept in the UK is put at 16,000 (source: BMF 2004 data).

That would make about 73,000 based on that ratio and the number suggested above.

A client has a possible product for bigger boats

I'm guessing parking distance sensors. Is there a prize?

In most western maritime nations it is reckoned that 85-90% of the boats are under 7 meters or so, with most of those being considerably under. I would suspect, but do not know, that those over 15m represent quite a small proportion of the remaining 10-15%. Still quite a big number if Boatless's figure for all boats is correct.
