Actually likely to be sailed (or at least their owners think so!). Doesn't matter if we're taking about converted MFVs, MTBS, ASRL's etc.

Since almost every vessel will be underwritten 'eventually' by Lloyds, maybe they might have a figure. Whether or not they would divulge it is another matter I suppose.

Occasionally the yachting press appear to make assumptions / estimates on numbers of leisure craft, based upon what ?

Why do you want/need to know ?

I would guess that most have registration but don't suppose the powers that be would divulge.

How many leisure boats are owned in the UK?
British Marine Federation has consulted on this issue with marine insurers, magazine publishers and the RYA. The consensus is that approximately 451,000 boats are kept in the UK and approximately 90,000 UK-owned boats are kept abroad. The number of foreign owned boats kept in the UK is put at 16,000 (source: BMF 2004 data).

That would make about 73,000 based on that ratio and the number suggested above.

In most western maritime nations it is reckoned that 85-90% of the boats are under 7 meters or so, with most of those being considerably under. I would suspect, but do not know, that those over 15m represent quite a small proportion of the remaining 10-15%. Still quite a big number if Boatless's figure for all boats is correct.
