A square sennet can be used in lots of ways, but most useful on snap shakles and the like...

Take two pieces of light line, 2 or 3 mills is about ok and thread them as in the pic. below...

Then take one part over the other as in the pic. below...

The next part goes over the previous one and under the next as in the pic. below...

And so on until you complete the square...

Pull the two ends of each piece of line tight, so that the sennet is drawn together, keeping even tension on both parts...

Keep on going around and around until you consume all of the line, making sure you keep the whole thing tensioned as you go...

When you get to the end of the lines, cut them off nice and short and melt them with a cigatette lighter or somesuch (if they're synthetic fibre which they are most lightly to be these days) to stop the whole thing coming undone...

he made this, as temporary for me. He said I should make my own bell rope, as I found the bell.

He also carved this for Louise and me:

If you've met me, you may well have seen Tigger with this:

Tony, I'm very impressed with your handiwork. I wouldn't have anything like that on a snapshackle on my boat. I would worry too much about it getting caught and undoing the shackle at the wrong time. We do have a doglead which was made by a Newlyn fisherman.
