Jojo heads out from Eastbourne today, heading for rye, to follow the last 1/1.5hr of flood tide up the river to the town, hopefully berth at strand quay and try out sitting in mud :)
Anyone been recently? Anything to watch out for or reccomendatioms?

Then tomorrow it's ramsgate, for the last push up to leighonsea/canvey island on tue.

I have the crossing the Thames estuary book and will peruse that tonight, tho I notice it's more about crossing to black water etc.

At first glance it looks like I would be best taking the south Edinburgh channel and then up past shoeburyness and Southend? Any better options? Any reason not to?
Forecast for tue is light easterlies and it's neaps. Hw at Leigh on sea is approx 8pm, so would look to arrive around 7ish, there will be no pissing about, if required the engine will go on, then would expect 6knts over the ground, but am expecting to be able to sail it, certainly from the Edinburgh channel.
looking to take the last of the tide up to north foreland and then butt against tide to be off margate sands or south Edinburgh channel as it turns and carry it the rest of the way up.
Any problems with this thinking? Or any better ways to do it?
Thanks, steve

My only first hand knowledge of Rye is that you must walk up to the town, a hidden gem of the South coast. Second hand is having been in and out a couple of times on someone else's boat is that the mud is very forgiving at the quay and all the upper reaches.

If you enjoy creek crawling try Sandwich...very helpful and friendly harbourmaster when I visited 15 years ago! Rye I visited by road recently and drying piles looked fine.....last three in 1981!

Rye mud is good. You might settle at a slightly weird angle but adjust ropes as you are about to touch to keep close to the ladder.

Nice market. Bikers park above you. V little noise. Ask them about their machines - they'll be happy to talk to you.

Well, the South Edinburgh Channel is an unusual route. Never been buoyed - well in our lifetime - and the Knob Channel buoyage was lifted 7 years ago. It will be an interesting diversion but only a couple of extra miles. Personally I would suggest you use Route 24 in my book which is Ramsgate to Sea Reach No 1 via the Princes Channel I assume you have the second edition?). It is easy to stay out of the way of shipping in the Princes Channel by staying just outside or just inside the buoyage. From Sea Reach it's another 7.5nm into the Leigh Creek.

Tides! Ah. This is one of those passages. If you start with beneficial tide you will end with adverse - and vice versa. The best you can do is neutralise the adverse tide - let me explain. Route 24 is 29nm. If it was a lake @ 6 knots it would take you 5 hrs approx. With the tides, the best time mathematically @ 6 knots boat speed on Neaps is 4hrs 47 minutes!

The last of the north going tide up the Foreland is 2 hrs after HW Sheerness. That would take you 5hrs 12mins arriving at the Sea Reach No 1 waypoint around -4.50 before the next HW Sheerness. The extra is only going to take you another hour approx. to get you into Leigh. Perhaps a little early for water into the Creek? Leaving at +3 after HW Sheerness on Tuesday (aka 08.42 BST + 3hrs = 11.42am) would take you 5 hrs arriving at the Sea Reach No 1 around -4.00 before the next HW Sheerness i.e. 1715hrs + the extra hour arriving at half tide at Leigh. +4.00 start = 4hrs 51 mins to Sea Reach No 1 at -3.10 approx.
