Set off from Hornng on the Broads with a mate in my 27ft Aquador at 6am on Tues morning to arrive at Chertsey on Wed night.
Absolutely fantastic trip, stopped off at Burnham on Crouch which as I was warned is a long way off the route but B&C is good and the marina, bar and restaurant are just fine. The night was below freezing so getting up at 05.30 to icy decks added to the fun ...the next bit of the trip was scary for the next 2 hrs or so we ploughed thru the worst seas in my limited experience...you know wipers on sunroofs shut to keep the sea out etc.
Once round the corner we were alright and were soon up the Thames estuary and thru London and THEN it happened there was this orrible orrible noise as the duo props hit the bottom of the river...this was admittedly low water but we were well below Richmond in the middle of the river with supposedly 2 mtrs of water. Now we could only manage 5kts without the most awful vibrations but this was enough speed to get us to a Volvo dealer yard.I have sent off the insurance claim form and am waiting to hear the extent of the damage which I think will be alot.
Anyway on a more positive note I am now Thames based so hope to bump into (not literally) some of you nice folk sooner or later.

<font color=blue>The final part of the Thames from Chiswick to Teddington should not be attempted near low water. Forget what the charts say there are lumps and bumps everywhere.

Did you pass Eel Pie Island (Northside) late this afternoon? I may have seen you as I was working on my boat opposite the Barmy Arms.

I think it should be compulsory for all contributors to fly the Club Burgee while under way instead of sneaking past with their fridge locked. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Welcome to the Thames anyway and I hope to see you during the season.

Just out of interest, do you have a depth guage?

Dont worry about it. Managed to run our last boat aground right outside Fulham football ground. More than half way up the tide and nothing shown on the chart. So little water the boat leaned over on to one side and the crew shouted 'We're sinking'.
'Silly moo', said I, 'If its that shallow, you can probably walk ashore' Good news was that we floated off in 15 minutes and no damage. Welcome to the Thames and the joys of boating in just a few feet of water.

B*ll*x. If that had been your intention you could have asked the question explicitly. As it is you were obviously trying to score a cheap point with a sarcastic 'question' Wait until you have made a few mistakes and learned from genuine experience. In the meantime stop behaving like a prat! [no smile]

Well you have shown yourself to be the pratt, I shall just ignore your rude remarks. Please don't butt in when I ask a question and stick to your own. questions and answres. It's a free world you know, now get back in your cage and I will try not to rattle it again. Perhaps we can get the answer to my question now he is safely in his cage /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I wouldn't have chosen this as a battle ground but..........Others here have shown extreme tolerance to your drivel and that's both their choice and a credit to them. Me? I've never suffered fools gladly and this is a case in point. I don't knock the size of your boat - everyone has to start somewhere. But I do object to you reading one leaflet and then lecturing the World on what you should or shouldn't do. Will not be wasting download time on you in future - end of conversation.

What are you on about? Leaflets? Dear me I think you need to get stress counselling ASAP. Anyway best to just live and let live, e.g. don't read any of my posts, stay in cookoo land it will be safer for you there /forums/images/icons/wink.gif I take it you don't have a depth guage on your boat then /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif or you can't operate it and keep running aground /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif obviously my simple plain question hit a raw nerve somewhere /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I wouldn't bother with him Lanason, he just flew off the handle for no reason being rude, perhaps he just missed his happy pill tonight, certainly an odd person /forums/images/icons/wink.gif That is the end of the matter for me, I would however like to know how reliable these depth sounders are.

Calm down

Depth sounders are as accurate as the information you give them. Usually you can give them an offset. Many opinions on these boards, do a search.

Basics are:

Depth under hull
Depth from water surface
Depth from transponder
Depth to provide you with room to spare

Any of these are valid as long as you and everyone on board knows the setting.

Lots of opinions to choose from.... This is one that's been debated many times

Depends, some of the more complex units have "Offset" function. Thats basically a little gizmo that lets you put in the measurement from the transducer to the bottom of the keel. So that it shows depth under the keel. Some more basic units dont, so they show depth under the transducer. You've got to do a bit of maths and know various measurements to get proper depth under keel or from skeg of uoutdrive or props and shafts etc. Then theres the fact that it is set up to work in salt water and not fresh. Then you got to take into account the type of seabed you have, Then you've got to take into account has it been set right to work properly, such as gain control etc. Its probably as accurate as the users understanding of it. What one you had fitted.

try getting a piece of rope marked at 1 metre intervals with a heavy weight on the end of it.
Chuck it over the side - but you must do it at speed as the boat lifts out of the water and rises up and so u really wann know how much water there is under you at say 25 knots

Brendan, I found a pipe on my boat today when I git it on the trailer, it is on the transom with a wire going to it. I didn't know if that was a depth guage or the speedo. I have found that my depth guage shows different readings to my charts, I have to be careful because as you know the medway river can be very shallow in places, just wanted to know if you can trust these things. As for calibration, nobody told me about that, I hope the dealer has sorted it out, he did not tell me what calculations I should do!!

Mine is a Lowrance 3500, so if anyone has any hints on that it would be appreciated.

Those depths on the chart are LAT you need to ad the hight of the tide to them to get your true depth of water. You'll very rarely see the depth shoen on the chart for real. Only at LAT
