We were bobbling around Southampton docks yesterday waiting for MS Balmoral to depart when I picked up on Ch16 the yacht Jaguar having a go at Maersk Rapier for something or other. Soon after Solent Coastguard came on and told them to find a working channel to sort out their sailing disagreement.

Bit later Maersk Rapier was on Ch67 giving what sounded like a near miss report, and following that Solent Coastguard was calling up yacht Jaguar and asking for their account.

Being so far away I only got snippets of the conversations. Did anyone else pick this up?

heard pretty much the same as yourself as we were leaving Cowes, sorry, only snippets too

Wasn't in the vicinity myself but here in the Bristol Chanell we are surrounded by commercial shipping and we keep the hell out of it's way.
Be interesting to know what happened though ;-)

we were also seeing out the Balmoral, and we did see you bobbing around for a hours or so!

we also heard the first rather inappropriate broadcast on VTS ch14 "...bloody fool, why did you just tack across my bow!" , then as you said, Southampton VTS saying please take your sailing differences to a working channel... but didn't heard any further comms from either... interested to find out more!

Forget about a near miss. We were actually hit this Bank Holiday weekend by a Starlight 35.
On board: The Metropolitan Police Sailing Club.

I've chartered her in the past. She's quite small inside . :D

This reminds me of a curious story. I was out on the newer MPSC Hallberg Rassy and we moored up in East Cowes. This mad woman then came out of what looked like a tatty old liveaboard that was moored up on the other side of the pontoon and started ranting and raving at us because someone had apparently smashed into her boat aboard one of the MPSC boats. What did this have to do with us?

Whilst I appreciate the MPSC boats can only be chartered by MPSC members, why is it we're all tarnished with the same brush? If you get hit by a BOSS charter boat, do you give anyone chartering a BOSS boat the evil eye when you see them?

Bit more info as the Met Instructor was having a really bad weekend.
We were berthed stern in at East Cowes Marina.
As he left the marina he turned to go out. Now side on to the tide he caught our bows as he was carried sideways.
He had to be pulled off by the marina rib.
Once outside Cowes his engine over heated. The engine coolant had been dumped due to a loose hose clip.
He sailed on to Shepards Wharf at speed.
Having sorted that out he went to Poole.
Outside Poole with no wind and a foul tide the engine ceased. He dropped the hook. Fiddled for 2 hours before finally giving up and calling the RNLI.

If it was a Sunsail boat you would definitely be tarnished with the Sunsail brush.
P.S. Hope you're not planning on booking the Starlight 35 for a while. See last post.

We were surrounded by Sunsail boats at Haslar last night, no issues at all. The only entertainment was from the 40' BOSS boat crewed by a husband and wife team that had a rather comedy false start this morning. Could have ended up a cropper but luckily it did not.

No need. We have our own boat now. :D

Don't know why the RNLI.
But.....
Apparently there was a worry about the engine before the instructor took it out and this info wasn't passed on to him.
He said the RNLI were great. It cost him a lot of beer afterwards and one of the crew was seen swapping phone numbers with one of the lifeboat crew.

We came across the Rapier on the way into portsmouth, she was on my port side but being somewhere between BIG and Kin Massive we didnt stand on, in fact we went astern of Rapier, the two tugs fore n aft and the police boat with flashing light. After going astern we headed for 1m and 1.5 m contours in the knowledge we were safe and out the way !

I am mystified why the raggies cant have a glance at a chart and anticipate a ships movement in order to keep out the way:confused:

Rapier then unloaded part of her cargo during Saturday afternoon and got even bigger !

A snap taken at night shows just how big she is, almost as high as the spinnaker tower ;)

As far as I am aware she only part unloaded and still would have been restricted by draft until several miles out.

Isnt it time a local bylaw is introduced in the solent to the effect anyone navigating in or across a channel has to be under power, alright they could leave the sails up as well but it would make it clear to the numpties that they havent got right of way.

Not the same league, but pottering up the Hamble on Friday, and the boat in front slows/ stops as this tiny dinghy crosses the river. Ok, all well;some guy with wife and very young daughter out on the water. Two thirds of the way across the river, he tacks and heads back at 180 degrees, and clearly didnt look. WHY OH WHY do I see this so often??
The river in flood, and a Nimbus, probably single engined, is hurled into reverse,in an effort not to run straight over them. I kid you not, I really thought this dinghy was going to get crushed. The Nimbus is now side on being swept down the river, just misses the dinghy, mother clutching her young daughter.
I cant blame the mobo.. but the dinghy skipper damn nealry killed someone. Idiot.

I don't think anyone believes they are stand-on over car transporters and container ships in the Solent. They just aren't keeping a good enough lookout and don't realise how fast the ships are travelling, and end up in the wrong place.

I think we all see this. Had the same in Chitchester last year just past itchenor, dinghy with husband and wife crossing ahead of me so I slow and he passes ahead of me, gets a further 20ft past me and tack back across. I have to select reverse pronto..However there is a 39ft Bravaria behind me with full sail up rapidly approaching my stern, he came within one boat length of me before I could shove the boat in ahead and scoot out the way of him... the rule is if you tack into an avoidable collision its your fault...

I don't generally see this, but I don't often go up rivers that have lots of dinghies around. I'm curious though - was there space for him to continue on the same tack instead of coming back towards you?

As overtaking boat it was his duty to keep clear of course. Although everybody is required to do what they can to avoid collision, which it sounds like you did. And sadly, not all sailing skippers realise that "overtaking boat" trumps "power gives way to sail".
