Whilst the colregs govern us all I feel that a little consideration is required in these situations. Also, many racers have a pretty clear idea of the regs as the racing rules are - in effect - based upon them
I raced dinghies and yachts for many years. There were times when we inwardly cursed cruising boats that stood-on when there was an alternative and caused us a problem. The point, as made by several others, is that racing status confers no additional rights.
For me, it is standard practice to give way to racing boats when I am cruising. This is my choice as I do not want to spoil anybody's race. On the other hand, I am not saying that this is what all of us should. However, I cannot think of an occasion where I have done this and not received a cheery wave and thanks from the crew of the racing boat.
We can see much of the Blackwater from our home. The river is full of dinghies this week as mentioned is previous posts and many of these are being sailed by youngsters. Let's give them a chance to enjoy themselves, treat them with consideration and respect and remember that we all did some pretty silly things when we were youngsters. Most of us continue to do so.
Is there anybody on this forum - including the OP - who has never done something daft whilst afloat?
