Considering a berth at Titchmarsh, we live in NE London, Leytonstone, anybody else live locally have an idea as to roughly ho0w long the drive takes from London to Walton on a Friday evening or Saturday morning?

Ramsgate is slipping off my list for a variiety of reasons.

Primary one these days is there are not many destinations for a day sail there and a day sail back. Great if you race.

Titchmarsh has sheltered waters if you want it, Harwich/Orwell/Stour just up the road. Deben an hour or so, Alde a bit more.
Head out past the shipping roundabout for TSS practice.

Altogether worth the effort to get there.

M25 to Harwich on an average day 1 hour. On a bad day 1 1/2 hours, so comparable I'd of thought. The only place you would really get held up is between Walton and the A120 (single lane), After that it's 2 lanes all the way. Sunday Afternoon early evening in the height of summer (if we get one) is the time to avoid.

P.S. The cruising grounds are pretty good, unless you go north of Lowestoft then you enter the abyss! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Thanks for the input chaps,

We know the whole area fairly well from the water, having had boats at Burnham for 20 years we have sailed the coast quite extensively, but I have not driven up that way for many years.

I really love the Backwaters and the Brightlingsea/Blackwater bit of the world has been a destination since I was 8. I don't fancy Bradwell as my memory of the marina there is that it is very very tight for space, and our boat does not do tight spaces.

Ramsgate has been good for the last few years, and it is a great destination to set off on longer passages, with the right tidal assistance you can be in Weymouth in 36 hours, but as you say it is not the best location for weekends. We have done Calais Gravelines and Boulogne to death.

I will try the drive up to Walton.

One possibly important question, what do you draw?

Titchmash is not as limited as Bradwell, but some deep draft yachts do have problems getting in and out of the backwaters at certain states of tide. The shallowest area is probably the flats on Dovercourt Bay, which is certainly shallower than the Walton channel, I think, someone will no doubt correct me.

We have friends who kept their yacht in Titchmarsh and there were some weekends when they had limited access. They drew about 2m.

FWIW I usually reckon on about 45 minutes from my offices in Great Bentley to Jct 28. I also allow 20 minutes for the trip down to Walton from the office. So on the proviso you do get a clear run, 1 hour is comfortably achievable! Titchmarsh is also far nicer than Burnham (IMHO) which is also probably only a 1 hour run to Jct 28!

If you can get to Titchmarsh in a reasonable time it is probably the better option. Agree with you about Burnham but Bradwell or Mersea also offer a wide cruising area.

Walton has advantages as we usually sail with our 11 year old twin daughters. When we have been to Walton they enjoy pottering around the creeks and making an occasional visit to the pier. The girls have their Blue Peter dinghy and I suspect that a reasonable time could be had sailing that around whilst we are anchored up.

Your memory serves you well. Berths are tight and the fuel berth was a joke against long-keelers.

Have you thought about the Orwell marinas?

Perhaps slightly further, but possibly a bit quicker due to the roads involved?

Foxes, just 2 mins of the A14 junction that is 1 mile from the A12 junction..

Or a few mins up the road to SYH or Shotley....

I suspect spaces are available quite widely now, with no tidal restriction and plenty of sheltered sailing area for those less than ideal days
