All this talk about God's country has got me going
I have booked for Dearheart and myself to go to
a clients little place (probably several thousand acres)
for a few days after Crimbo.
I understand we land at Inverness , hire car and drive
to somewhere near John-o-Groats.
Any suggestions as to sights to see, things to buy?
I have already thought of the obvious, like whisky, /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
sailing prospects and phrase book. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hire a decent car - the 120-odd miles from Inverness to JOG are over some of the best driver's roads in Britain.
Of course, stick to the speed limits at all times.

I have been in touch with the car hire peeps
They have earmarked a "Model "t" , apparently
the only model available, does this count as a decent car?

They must have updated the fleet since I was last there.

Take the following.... at least three strong umbrellas,a couple of waterproof coats or cagoules, boots ,wellies,..about five hats ,gloves ,scarves,at least three fleeces,(each) and not least lots&lots of wonga. You will find most places are closed ..or as we say in Scotland "Shut", and those which can be bothered to open will fleece you stupid.I am born & bred Scots, love my country but it pi*ses me off when I see how tourists are treated ,especially out of season. Don't let this put you off !!!!. SWMBO & I are off to a sunny place over the hols.to look at boats for sale,so will miss out on the festivities back home . Final piece of advice for you over the hogmanay (new years eve) period ...Don't drink on an empty head!!. Having said all this, you could be in for a glorious spell of winter weather.. Hope so!

Oh.. I almost forgot... if you are flying to Inversneckie (Inverness to you) be very careful.. The Dakota is a damn fine aircraft but have a tendency to give you a headache if you disembark and walk under the props before they have stopped rotating.

Thank you Jamesmar for that (helpful) advice.
I will try not to make the same mistake as last time
when asking directions to Kilcaldy, apparently I
pronounced it as spelt....wrong! "Deh yus mean
Kirrcuddy laddie" (it was a long time ago)

From Inverness to JOG you'll drive through Wick which is home to The Old Pulteney, a particulalrly fine dram. One of the best the wrong side of the Sound of Islay.
Further South, Lybster is worth a stop-off. Lots of viking influences (look for the Gray Cairns if you're into archaeology). Waterlines in Lybster is a sort of maritime museum. Another viking museum at Auckengill... Northland or Norseland I think.
If that's too much culture head for Thurso and take the surfboard. Might be a tad chilly in January, but you'll be guaranteed a tube or two /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.
Get an OS map. Yes, there are roads but I found some fairly major routes (single track with passing places) were not on road maps.

Inverness and North a great place. My wife comes from this area. A nice drive North now made quicker with bridges at Kessock,Cromarty, and Dornoch. If you get the chance and it is open pop into "Glenmorangie" distillery in Tain, you will drive past it. Make sure you stop at Dornoch a few miles after Tain, now famous after Madonnas wedding there, the Cathederal well worth a look. The road from Dornoch quite spectacular as it follows the coast NE bound. Watch out for the hill at Berridale pretty steep and if snow around forget it. Enjoy your trip and enjoy 2005 .

Paul.
