Re: harumph

um, with respect, you've made 15 posts. So you can sort of like it or lump it. Stands to reason that people who are bystanders will want it to be all about boats. Bit like non-regulars at a pub just want instant service cos they don't know anyone.

Re: harumph

can we move this thread somewheer more appropriate, please? I'm still trying to find out if two £1m boats are better than one £2m boat. Not knowing is keeping me awake at night.

that's not fair. Zazu's opinion is as equal to anyone who has 14 zillion posts. Just because you've drunk more pints sat on that stool doesn't mean that the stool is yours.

Kim I replied on the other thread but I really think salami slicing forums doesn't work. imho you should keep one forum with B and NB mixed, but just quietly ask those who have been starting the more inane NB threads to stop doing so. That's all that's needed. We need the approrpiate NB content, that's what has made this forum so successful

It won\'t work

Not sure this will change anything Kim. Ya see, people will gravitate toward their chosen forum in order to catch up on things with their virtual mateys and there will ensue conversation - some boaty, some not.

It's a bit like going to tcm's imaginary pub, where all your mates are having a good time in one room, and you wander off to another room because you want to raise a different topic. Trouble is - there's no one there to raise it with. So you go back into the room where you know your mates are.

In short - you're wasting your time and effort (IMHO).

Re: harumph

erm well, my post above was a bit harsh, so sorry for it reading badly. I take the point of equal voting rights (ie none at all - it's not our forum) hwoever, it did feel as though zazu sees the fourms as entirely "passive" - he joined to read about etc etc - rather than to join in, no? Follow this logic and you get to the point where the greatest attemntion is paid to those who contribute the least - most registered users post only a little and there's always a ton of non-registred users. It's a bit like giving a vote to people who don't know what politics is, and asking people to pay tax to subsidise all the people who don't fancy a job or didn't work hard at school - i mean that would be really ridiculous wouldn;t it? :)

sorry for being nasty, zazu

That is the way to go. Also to make sure that they are marked n.b.
If you only want to read boatie jobbies then dont open a n.b. - but you will miss a lot of banter. IMHO.

Agree jfm.

If you do not want to read the NB stuff then simple dont open same.

After a while the regular guys who make this place so interesting know who to 'open' and who to 'bin'.

Some of the NB stuff has really made me laugh recently. Esp Nelson&Co

Re: Noise doesn\'t equal seniority

hi

ultimately im not too bothered either way but since you asked...

I think you have to decide if this is a boat forum or a forum for people who like boats if its the former then perhaps a seperation is something worth considering
if its a forum for people who enjoy boating and therefore should encompass everything boaty and nb ( which i think it should be) then dont seperate them, it makes it all the more interesting

also what if a thread starts boaty then goes off track, as it usually does, is it going to be moved? then if it comes back on track moved back again oh the headaches this will cause oh the stress of not knowing where to look!

IMHO it ain't broken so no need to fix it.

As long as posters do the decent thing and put NB in the title I don't have a problem

Kim, this really is not as simple as it would first appear is it? Sure we have the subject of boats, but the allied subjects go from being very relavent to boats, to hardly relavent but only just. One person will make a comment, maybe relavent to boats maybe not, just like in the pub, and the whole reaction swings into place away from the original subject.
My feelings are that NB should be applied to posts not directly associated with boats, as it does now, but if you think a regular NB forum open only to registered forumites, I dont see why not. If it helps you guys sort the IT handling, so be it.

It is clear that some people assume that only boat subjects should ever be put forward. However is is pleasant and sometimes entertaining to hear about all sorts of other things from people from all sorts of backgrounds, but who share the same interest, boats.

One other option is to have a joke section like Ribnet do. This way all the humorous items can be stored away and only people that want to hear funny jokes stories or taunting can go to that area.

IMHO it is best if you dont have a vote on it and just decide whats going to be done. You can please some of the people some of the time etc etc etc I would say do what you feel is best and if it doesnt work at all then I am sure you will soon know about it.

FWIW,

I am a relatively new joiner and registerd because of the broad spread of topics posted, some Nb too.

I don't read all the NB stuff and I guess that the same applies to to others on here too.

If it were solely boats and boats only I would have found it a bit too "anoraky" and probably woulldn't have registered...

So I agree with the others here... perhaps a little bit of quiet persuasion to the individuals who only post NB stuff may be the answer.

Can't you create another view option in the dispay profile to filter out anything with NB as the first words of a thread? That way anyone who wishes not to see NB threads will have them filtered out, the rest of us will still see it as it is.

Kim, you are right it's not an exclusive club and I don't believe anyone tries to make it exclusive either. There are lots of people here who know each other personally, the vast majority of those have met because of the forum. I believe anyone new here will after time get to know the "style" of posts and can happily join in (or not) and feel comfortable.

Some face to face meetings between forum members are for those who know each other personally as friends others are open to anyone, sometimes even raggies are invited too!!

Keep it as it is please but give those who only want to view boaty stuff the option.
